Discovery:

A funny thing happened last night. After about 2 hours (and 300k credits of buying locked containers) it came up in conversation with another smuggler that although I cannot make them until level IV , I could _use_ clamps!!!

Ugh, so much wasted time!!! Oh well, noob mistakes are bound to happen, even to me

Thats OK... Way back when I started, I destroyed like 5 or 6 containers before I figured out you could actually read the instructions and get it 100% right!

Back when I started ... clamps weren't available (day 2) ... all locked containers without clamps ... never used a clamp for ANY of the grind ...

@ slice 1 I sliced terminals while shouting "Will slice locked containers" (back when I could get paid for that )

@ slice 2 I met up wtih a noob weaponsmith and got a boatload of WUKs and survival knives (1000-1500 of each I think if I remember correctly) and sat in Anchorhead slicing.

Then ... I did spice ... then I went out with a novice doc friend (before buffs were around) and started shooting critters afraid to leave Tatooine. Then he finally talked me into Dathomir Baznitches ... all the way to master....

Blew a whole crate and wrecked a few containers before I figured it out - DOH!!

Ah yes. I remember the days when no clamps were available.

You were happy when you could make Flow Analyzer Nodes, because then at least you had a 75% chance to succeed in that container. And you cursed your head off every time you failed, because that was 250 xp gone forever!

I didn't do the crate of items until SlicingIII to get up to Slicing IV.

The pistol xp was by far the biggest, nastiest grind. I ended up doing it on Quenker missions. Tons and tons of Quenker missions.... <ugh>

There are missions in which you "deliver an item while hostiles attack you" in every profession. I still don't consider [Smuggler's Alliance] pilots to be Smugglers, nor 'Smuggling' - at least not any more than Rebel Pilots or Imperial Pilots might sometimes "smuggle", with a lower-case s - JFreeman - 10/6/04

yeah the pistols grind looked like it would be no fun, so I am finishing BH pistols and 2 speed blocks from pistoleer first. Got to slicing three this morning and then restarted my comp to the wonderful error message of "could not reserve heap memory". Unfortunately I have not been able to "slice" my way around that. According to the tech forums though, I am far from alone.

ugh.

You never destroyed one container because you used clamps that someone else made to open them.

When the game first started, no one was at Slicing IV, so there were no clamps to use.

I'm getting back into the game and re-assessing my toon. I had novice weaponsmith/novice smuggler/merchant skills. I don't have the time to set up a stable weaponshop now, so i'm changing to smuggler/pistoleer. Tonight iblew all but 5k of my credits on containers (I already had 4 crates of clamps) to get to slicing 2. Once I got there I couldn't find a smuggler around, so I went to Eisley to get it off the trainer so I could get into terminal slicing, and start making cash, pistol XP, faction points and slicing xp all together.

The skill costs 6K

The best part of the story is that I wasted my first container because for some reason the "negative" cable is the red one. Here in the UK, if it's red it's positive. I cut the wrong one, blew 5k credits and my chance to have the skill tonight.

/sigh
