Ok, I just finished watching this for the first time. All I can say is...
WHAT WERE THESE PEOPLE ON???
And where can I get some?

Hehe...
That would be why Lucas doesn't consider the Holiday Special as "canon"...nor do they consider it as part of "official continuity"...it falls into the category of apocrypha ...which is basically like being in the mall with your parents and desperately trying to pretend that you've never seen them before in your life...
BTW...I personally have never seen the Holiday Special...(thank God)...

I have heard many things about it and want to see it just so I can know what is so bad about it.

I must be ancient. I remember seeing it when it came on. I was about 9 or 10 and thought it was great. I guess I had yet to really develop any sense of good taste.

Not strictly true, some concepts and characters created for the show have become part of EU canon, Chewies Family, and Wookiee Life Day, for example.

I think Lucas changed Chewbacca's family's names in the EU, but I'm not sure. In the special they had dopey cartoon names. I forget exactly, but his son was named something like "Stinky" and his father had a stupid "Seven Dwarvish" type name too.

Lumpawarrump (Lumpy)took on a new nameas part ofhis wookiee right of passage, but the other 2 still have the same names. Mallatobuck (Malla) and Attichitcuk (Itchy). Check the first paragraph of Chewies bio on the official site, its the closest you'll ever get to proof that the holiday special is EU canon
