Going TK"M" is the best bet if you don't want to wear armour as thats when you will have the TIA at 60.
Also no word as been announced if there is still that damage modifer in action for holding a weapon in your hand so you might be still taking 2.5 times the damage from holding your heavy weapons.
Just a note, Im currently thinking of MS/TKA and Pistols 0/0/0/4 to give me
MD = 200
RD = 185
Not including unarmed defence or pistol defence
which gives me better defence then a BH and the ability to not wear armour, plus Fan shot and stopping shot form the pistoilr tree.
It should also be noted that having a weapon in your hand does NOT cancal out your TKA TIA, the only think that cancels out TIA is putting on Armour.

The Meditate line gives no TK Armor. 4000 would just give you the 20 from Novice.
In my own research on the subject of TK Armor, it seems an all-or-nothing thing. Either you Master TK and get the 60% Innate Armor, or you stay away from TK (unless you want the Meditate, which I think will not be such a needed convenience in the CU) and wear your professions's certed Armor.

I would assume you mean that the value of having 20% is next to nothing compared to armor, whereas the 60% is comparable to armor. Otherwise I wouldn't dismiss a free 20% defense if you were going to run around without armor anyway, as HOTDOG suggests.
I agree with you that if you're going to go without armor you should definitely have the master box.

Yeah. In another thread, I was working on a template MSmuggler/MPistoleer/TK0440 which would get me 40 of that 60 TK armor. I was thinking I could run around without armor that way, but I'd lose my Terrain Negotiation (I'm probably going MSmuggler/MPistoleer/BH Pistols), Advanced Recon Armor still beats that 40 TK armor, and I'll have the skill to remove all the armor penalties.
The reason to try for no armor is mainly style, but I think I can work with all black Ubese, if I can find a suitable replacement helmet, and I think the Mabari one might be ok...

I posted this in the COmmando and TKA forums but I know you guys are the smartest so....
Alright, let's just talk numbahz (as they say in my hood).
Let's say I'm going to be a:
Master Smuggler
Master Commando
TK 4000
Pistoleer 3000 (pistoleer has a mess of defense as well, folks! For you all looking for abilities).
My Defense Numbahz would be:
MeleeDefense +155
Ranged Defense+130
Pistol Defense+30
Heavy W. Def.+50
Unarmed Def.+40
*We are talking about going without armor so forget it exist for the moment...
Now, I assume that when I have nothing in my hand my defense is my general defenses plus my unarmed defense:
Melee +195
Ranged +170
with a pistol in hand:
Melee +185
Ranged +160
and with a heavy weapon:
Melee +205
Ranged +180
This would lead me to believe that my best defense would happen while I had a heavy weapon in hand.
Okay, NOW let's see what difference it would make if I say, Mastered TK instead of Commando (I'll be Commando 0400 everything else remains the same)-
MeleeDefense+150
Ranged Defense+135
Pistol Defense+30
Heavy W. Def.+10
Unarmed Def.+40
This would mean:
Unarmed:
Melee +190
Ranged +175
with a pistol in hand:
Melee +180
Ranged +165
and with a heavy weapon:
Melee +160
Ranged +140
Now my best defense would take place when I was unarmed. BUT NOTICE!
I had better defense in the previous template with my Heavy Weapon than I would Unarmed in this temp.
Does that mean I could run around without armor with the first temp?

No, if you run around without armor in the first template, you'd take 100% of the damage that hit you, so wear the armor. In the second template, you're a TKM, so you have 60% TK armor to reduce the damage that hits you, so don't wear the armor.
Seems like a trade off to me. If you want to use the Heavy Weapons, go with the 1st template and wear armor.

Without the skil ltrees in front of me...does the 4000 TK give you any of the TK defenses? I know at master it is at 60, but what is it at 4000. If it is enough to hedge the damage you'll be recieving it might be wroth it.
However, I think DR is right, I highly doubt that defense mods are going to have as much of an impact as armor. The armor is going to be such that you probably won't be able to make up the difference in mods....especially given the diminishing returns of benefit at the higher mod numbers. There may actually be such a minute difference between a defense of 165 and a defense of 180.
I haven't looked at any combat logs to analize numbers, but I would think there would be a huge difference in no armor and armor even if your mod numbers are 50 points different. Again, I don'thave the numbers to back it up, and I haven't logged enough TC time to say for sure.
The TKM without armor will be much better then running around with a Flamthrower with no armor with the first template. Add armor to the first template and it would bring you more in line with the TKM without armor.
