Thread: Does weapon/armor quality affect slices?

Hey everybody. I've been browsing these boards for several months now, but this is my first post.

I notice that there seems to be a large debate on factors influencing slicing percentages. I've only been a Master for a couple of weeks now and it seems to be, as is the current majority opinion, completely random.

However, I have noticed that high quality weapons and armor seem to get higher percentage slices far more often than lower quality items. For example, my composite suit is fairly patchwork (bought from a couple of different vendors) and the slices on it vary a great deal. The piece that has the best slice (breastplate, hooray!) was the piece with the best core stats as well.

I then sliced two more suits for some friends. One got his entire suit from the same armorsmith that did my breastplate and it was a high quality suit to begin with. I only got one slice under 20% on it and two in the mid 20's. The rest of the suit was 30+% slices and the gloves got a 43% encumberance slice (my personal best). The other suit I sliced was of a lower base quality and most of the slices were in the mid 20's.

It's harder to judge on weapons but I've noticed that loot weapons (geo pistols, tusken rifles, etc.) tend to get lower slices than player made ones.

Has anyone else noticed this? Has anyone done any kind of testing on this? Does it seem plausible or am I just finding patterns where none exist? Also, thanks for keeping up one of the most civil boards I've ever seen.

I would guess random luck. I've had quite a few Krayt weapons get slices under 20%, by Master Smugglers In addition, when I bought armor, I bought only high quality full suits...certain pieces would get very nice effectiveness or encumbrance slices, others would get not so nice slices. All from the same set, all the same quality, made by the same smith.

There is no official word on this, but I remember a long, long time ago a guy named Kav (I'm pretty sure it was Kav) did some work and he reached the conclusion that weapon/armor quality did give you a higher average for slices. Personally, I don't slice enough to see the difference, but if I remember correctly, he had some pretty compelling evidence.

actually his conclusion was that it didn't. Many of us contributed to proving that.

Then we had greenmarine confirm that nothing effects slicing.

An interesting conclusion a few friends of mine came to, by no means tested enough to make a statistical conclusion, but interesting nonetheless. It seems that for armor slices, you are more likely to slice for whatever the armor was experimented less for. So if you have a set of all-encumberance-experimented composite, you're more likely to slice for effectiveness, and vice versa. As I said, interesting, but as yet unsubstantiated. I may see if I can get a WS or AS to help me do more thorough testing on TestCenter once I finish up the Pistol XP requirements for Master.

Edit: Just realized, it'd only work on armor—for weapons speed and damage are the same experimental track. Whoops!

Did the armor have the same resource as the one you used in your laser knives? I have a theory that the average slices are higher if you use the same resources in your slicing gear as was used in the item you are slicing. I noticed this during the grind using CDEF's. Anyone care to test it?

As far as I know of, the knives were made from a different spawn, and I know the AUKs were make from a different spawn (I was the one who provided all of the smuggler's AUKs and WUKs, even did a bit of 5% *UK versus 99.8% *UK testing, just out of curiousity—as others have said, no difference whatsoever.)
