More defense heavy meaning mods, escape tactics, etc.
or more service oriented? meaning slices were pickable less random and spices were more viable?
I realize both are very desirable i just wondered where the majority feel the weight should be applied.

Honestly, I wish we had the mods and the slicing options
But I also don't think we should be able to craft spice at all. I think spice should have to be bought from either Valerian, Jabba, or maybe even Nym. This would recquire us to actually smuggle something. And when we have that spice in our inventory, our chances at evading a scan would decrease.
Of course, to have that be something that actually occured, spices would have to be able to compete with or be better than Chef food/drink. Otherwise you wouldn't see spice anywhere, nobody would bother.

I'd go for combat mods w/escape/evasion skills to work with smuggling missions/content.

Chefs should be crafting spices. I think if the devs want to make smugglers vital to other players as much as weaponsmiths, chefs, and doctors, each profession needs some items they use to be contraband. Such as certain weapons, certain foods, and certain armors. We should not craft our own contraband, that makes us self-reliant ,(not that thats a bad thing per se), but in order to perserve a sense of community people need to rely on eachother to a certain extent.
Also, to expand on this idea, the contraband fines should not be a flat 200, they should be relative to the economy and wealth of the player in question. This can be done quite easily: make it so if a player gets caught with contraband a certain percentage of their wealth gets deducted. Newbs dont get crippled, and the rich still have something to fear. Just a few ideas I got from this post.

Smugglersshould be more moving the "Stuff", not making it. They should (might of had the plans to) make a slicer profession. Smuggler is all about moving the "stuff", and not getting caught.
