Thread: Slicing Vs. Reverse Engineering

OK, I really want to be able to slice ship components... well mainly just the shields, engines, and guns. It just makes sense to me. However, I do not see RE as slicing.

RE takes x number of components, and set'stheir stats to be equal to the best stat for each category. What does this mean? Shipwrights can take their crappy crafted item (since lotted ones seem to be better) and make it to be as good as the looted one they got. I see no problem with this, and I actually think it's a good thing since creating a schematic for an item everytime you RE something would get way to hectic.

As far as slicing the three components I mentioned above, it is my understanding that because of the whole mass thing, they don't want us messing with them. To this I have only one response, who said I had to be messing with the output. What I mean is I'd much rather adjust the recharge rate or power consumption of a space weapon or shield vice making it stronger. I think we let their imagination limit what they could do. Maybe we can put a legitimate proposal together that allows us to slice certain ship components without overpowering anything (limit it to secondary stats).

Meanwhile, crafters are saying "We'd really like to have a TV that's larger than 12" and gets more than 4 channels and doesn't constantly lose vertical control", and entertainers are saying "Can we get some color instead of this B&W piece of junk?" And smugglers? We're listening to radio programs of "The Shadow" and "The Abbot and Costello Comedy Hour" and hearing FDR's Fireside Chats. We don't even HAVE a damn TV, much less a broken one or a "broken" one by Jedi standards. I'd LOVE to be as "broken" as they are." - The Legendary Solo4114

Sorry Zane, RE cannot be done on crafted items.

Slicing ship components would be nice though...

According to the guide in the shipwright forum (beta thread) and some of the posts I've seen there, it can be. My friend and I are going to test this out as soon as he makes some components though. The proccess for RE is put A amount of like items in RE kit, where X is equal to the RE level of the item. The RE analizes the items and makes their stats equal to the highest level held. From my understanding, this was done to create a balance between looted components and crafted ones... I'll let you know if I confirm one way or the other... If it's wrong, then sorry.

we have tried but were not successful if you are lucky enough please post your findings...heck who knows we may find that it magically can be done one day

By all means, test away , i couldn't do it in beta and there are still no RE numbers on crafted items, ergo, no RE can be done on crafted items. It would make the hunt for those level 5 components much easier if we could though.

REing crafted items is, as far as I know, impossible, and it should probably be kept that way. The existing system (with a few tweaks, like making crafted capacitors worth anything, or looted armor being better than auto-delete, etc.) is pretty solid--I've RE'd a number of items, including weapons of all things, that are either flat-out better than their crafted counterparts, or are situationally better due to how good they are in relation to their mass/energy consumption. Granted, the numbers on certain things need to be fiddled with, but I've been impressed by the balance already existing between crafted and RE'd items.

Letting crafted items be RE'd, however, gets pretty problematic. I could craft 7 different advanced blasters, experimenting on a different stat each time, and combine them all into a weapon of total devastation that would be leagues ahead of a normal blaster, for instance. And if we were limited to how many crafted items we could put into an REing session--like no more than one, for instance--you could still figure out where it would be most viable to experiment based on the various stats of the looted items you've already got. That might actually be kind of fun, but it would need to be considered long and hard before anything like it were ever put into play, because potential for abuse seems very high.

I like the system so far. If on top of this they found a way to let smugglers make some modifications of our own, I'd be downright floored.

We should be able to slice the items but after they are sliced cannot be REd again...slice the final product and thats that

Maybe have the option of either slicing or REing the component.

Would really matter with higher level stuff, I'd save it for RE because you stand to benefit more, but I'd slice the heck out of some of my level 3 components.

Otherwise, like I said, I'd be happy with some sort of substat like recharge rate or power consumption. We're not affecting the mass, which I hear they don't want to mess with, and I don't think it would creat overpowered items because we're not directly effecting the output.

Hell, I'd be happy with a 10 or 15 percent cap on the slices vice the 35 and 45 percent caps we have.

Zane

Oh yeah, and I dug a little deeper, my apologies, you cannot RE created components.
