The problem is bigger than you think. The Devs, especially JFreeman, seem to have a problem with distinction. If it were just dialogue writers, the patch notes and Dev statements wouldn't have the same wording. The problem lies in the fact that they can't keep things straight, and the people who were heading up JTL had no clue that there was actually a ground game and Smugglers already in the game.
If there hadn't been such an attempt to keep the ground and space game totally seperate entities, this might not have happened. Furthermore, they have stated that they want to bring them together more to make the ground and space game more interactive with each other which will further complicate the Smuggler/Smuggler Alliance conundrum.
I just wish more players would see it like you do since I commonly see the "Smuggler Pilot Needs Help With..." post on the pilot forum by non-Smugglers. It kills me that players who aren't Smugglers get more smuggler attention then those who are.

Ahem. It wasn't so noticeable before, but now I've done all the Privateer missions up to the Master Pilot mission, and in the later stages (Tier 4), almost all NPCs keep calling me a smuggler. My character is not a Smuggler but merely a gunslinger/bounty hunter/freelance pilot without a single Smuggler skill. Up until now, I thought the smuggler/Smuggler issue was just tied to the space missions with smuggler-ish content, but this is really silly.
I'm thinking that the dialogue-writers had little to do with the actual game, and were hired just to do the dialogue or something like that - my character even says lines like 'I'm just a simple smuggler'. This is, both from a RP standpoint (I never actually smuggled anything even in those smuggler-ish missions and consider my character just a hired 'helper' to the Smugglers Alliance) and from the standpoint of a true Smuggler, just plain wrong.
