Thread: Recent contraband vs vendor stuff and what I do...

We have our poll, we have our choices, and we have people wanting more choices. Now I know it's been debated before. I know a lot of people, myself included to some extent, have a middle ground position.

Just wanted to describe what I have to create an atmosphere of shadiness to my business dealings.

My shop is a Medium Tattoine house. The first room (not the hallway, the room) has a vendor that greets everybody others that sell shipwright stuff and unsliced weapons and armor. Walk in a little further and the room is decorated like a workshop with stations for each of the types of equipment we sell. In the far back corner, at the foot of the stairs sits my sliced weapons vendor. That vendor's greeting is, alert "psst, over here for the good stuff". Sometimes people miss the vendor, sometimes they don't. If they continue to look around the house and go downstairs they'll run into another vendor. That vendor says something like, "Interested in something that'll pick up your spirit?" This one has crates of spice.

What I tried to create is what our group roleplays. A legitimate business fronting for some shadier things. Don't be fooled, the legit stuff pays a lot more than the shady stuff... but the shady stuff is fun.

While I do not want to lose this aspect of my game, not everyone plays it in a way that reflects the nature of the goods. Because of this, and what I feel is the greater good of the game and the future of Smugglers, I chose the option to not have illegal items on vendors. If they don't take on an illegal aspect, the attitude of the rest of the players will never change. If it has to be A or B, I choose A. I'm hoping we get an option to place contraband selling points, no matter what they are. If this treads on merchant ground too much, then no deal. I would like to find a middle ground, but if it's not possible, I want them to be illegal, plain and simple.

"Jedi claims of being "broken" are like saying "But my TV isn't widescreen! It's broken! My TV can't show high-def pictures in 1080i, it can only do 720i! It's broken!" Meanwhile, crafters are saying "We'd really like to have a TV that's larger than 12" and gets more than 4 channels and doesn't constantly lose vertical control", and entertainers are saying "Can we get some color instead of this B&W piece of junk?" And smugglers? We're listening to radio programs of "The Shadow" and "The Abbot and Costello Comedy Hour" and hearing FDR's Fireside Chats. We don't even HAVE a damn TV, much less a broken one or a "broken" one by Jedi standards. I'd LOVE to be as "broken" as they are." - The Legendary Solo4114

my sentiments (almost) exactly! 5 Stars for you...

I like the idea of contraband being on vendors but only special vendors that:

  • aren't accessed publicly (like the galaxy bazaar- which I think is an awesome idea)

  • can ONLY hold illegal contraband

  • cause the owners to be hassled by security types (even small annoyances would be a step)

One might say "Why is it you support having other vendors listed but not contraband ones?" And I'd say "Other vendors are supposed to be easily accessed and contraband should be hard to find and scarce when you DO find it.

If it does come down to the black and white YES or NO solution- I too would rather NOT see contraband on vendors.

This of course means if your playing on off peak hours you won't have an easy time buying that new spice you read about- but hey, you get it when you can, eh?
