If a weapon is at its damage cap already, can a damage slice raise it above the cap?
Looking for an experienced smuggler to answer this question.

Nope. You're most likely going to get one of those terrible Negative slices im sure you're read about.
But then if you've read those slicing posts you already know that....

Don't those negative slices only occur when you're slicing a weapon pre-CURB that has exceeded the cap, and it's a "game check" that puts the weapon back under the cap, which registers as a negative slice?

i don't even think slicing a good weapon is worth it anymore

Just to clear this up, maybe... I put a 100 damage tissue in a regular scatter instead of a High Capacity Scatter (resources are identical so I didn't realize before it was too late). I capped the damage, EXP points did not raise the damage so I experimented in speed. Sliced it and raised the damage by 2 or 3 points.

Not at all. Any weapon, be it pre-CU or post-CU, which is better than the devs think it should be gets a negative slice.

For me as a weaponsmith the best approach is to heavily experiment on damage and SAC in the hope of getting a nice speed slice. Add adamage powerup to such a weapon and you'll be doing really well.

Well, if you slice a weapon and it increases damage or speed by even 1%, the weapon is still 1% better than it was.
But the negative slices are a concern. If they only happen with weapons that are over the cap (pre-CURB weapons), then I can understand the negative slice. But if it's possible to get a negative slice on a post-CURB weapon, and it's not a matter of the skill of a Smuggler (IE: negative slicing as an error for a less-experienced Smuggler), then that's definitely an issue.

Acukyra is one of those dreaded MBH/Smugglers, but I'm moving towards Rifles/Smuggler to fit my character a little better.

I have had a few weapons with very high base dps (presumably krayted) that gave me a system message something like: "this weapon cannot be further improved by slicing", so I'm not sure we have anything to fear from negative slices on damage capped weapons.
