Thread: Slicing Tag on Items

I was pretty happy when they added the slice tag to items. No longer having people asking me to slice something only to find out it had already been sliced. It lead to some confussion.

However I would like to see them add one other thing. What the slice actually was. I was asked to slice about 100 suits of armor for an AS. No big deal. Only problem was telling what each slice was. Of course he wanted to know what the slice was so he price it accordingly. Also to match up suits. It makes lots of sense for the customer to want to know.

So why not add it to the slice tag on the item. At the end of the tag just put "Speed 25%" or "Encumberance 41%". What ever it was. Make it a different color so it stands out. It would be of help for the customer and a time saver for us.

Amen...things would go a whole lot faster if that were the case.

Ok, I have two ways to deal with armorsmiths or weaponsmiths when bulk slicing, I give them a choice

A) bring 12 packs,name 6 as follows:

<=19%, 20-29%, >=30% for effect and

<=29%, 30-39%, >=40% for encumb

Sort as you slice each piece.

Label the other 6 in the same way, so you have a set when you trade

back and they're stocking on their vendor.

B) (easier way, but will not work withanything but comp armor)

As you slice, change the color

seperate colors for effect>=20%, <20% and >=30%

seperate colors for encumb >=30%, <30% and >=40%

I prefer puke green for bad, red for decent effect, blue for decent encumb

and white for any great slice.

Either way you have the "bad", decent and great slices seperated.

No smith should complain about that.

As for another tag, the devs don't need to worry about this as well, they have enough

**edit** to fix as it is.

Would make running my sliced weapons vendor that much easier as right now its sort of guess and check(much to lazy to write it all down and cross check it with big updates.)

It was brought up in the WS forums because the WS are getting screwed and being accused of having double sliced weapons on awesome regulary crafted weapons (pistols with 0.1 speed and such). With the name of the slicer (somewhere maybe as hidden text or soemthing) CSR's can go after the offending slicer and not the leginamte WS's.

On the subject of slice type and % tags: I agree 110%!!!

On the subject of including the Smugler's namd: nonononononononononononoooooo! I really would rather not leave a way of tracking me down!

I made most of my feeling known on the subject when the tag was first put in and this was a semi-active topic of discussion.

I am 100% against slicer's name on gear.

From a RP perspective it is my job to both hide any evidence of tampering so my customer doesn't get cought, but even more important is the ability to hide any traces back to me.

From a game play perspective I don't slice for the public, I don't wear a smuggler tag in public and I don't make myself searchable. Why in the world would I want to invite more random tells from folks I don't know asking my to fly to talus or lok to slice stuff for them. Even more so now that I've dropped to slice 4 from master. Just not in that business at all.

On the slice types / slice stats I'm less forcefully opposed, but I still sorta don't get it. There are 2 issues where slicing outcomes come into play - during the act of slicing so your client knows what the outcomes are - and in the weapon aftermarket.

While you're slicing gear - even mass amounts - I just think there are better solutions out there for relaying information about your slicing then labeling the weapon and then having your client examine it or not when trading back. From something as basic as system messages to something more complex and along the lines of the new ID interface where all the info is displayed and prices are worked out there.

As to the aftermarket here I have stronger concerns, and I know others have very strong opinions. The problem here is that it would be very easy for slicing details to creep in and artifically influnce the value of a weapon. A great weapon with a 15% speed slice is still a great weapon... put that weapon on a vendor now and the customer has all the info they know its sliced and the stats they are looking at are the "final" stats barring powerups. Take that same weapon and try and sell it post-label change and even thought the end stats are the same would you really be able to seel it as well if a customer sees it was "just" a 15% slice? Or on the flip side, how much value would be added to a crappy gun if it was labeled with a 35% slice? Or crappy composite with a 45% encumb slice? And then theres issues of capping and the number being meaningless... or rangins of speed slices provding the same outcome... could someone selling a factory run of sliced scout blasters sell all of the 1.5s ones for the same amount and as quickly? or would the ones that got a 21% speed slice sell for more then the ones that got a 19% speed slice?

In my mind the ONLY thing that should drive the value of a item is the current stats and if it has been sliced or not. How it happened to get there, be it 12pt vs. 10pt crafter, 30% v. 15% slice, encumb vs. effect slice, 1000SR vs 1SR metals, or whatever are pretty much irrelevant.

But, even with those reservations I'm not violently opposed to having more info about the slice listed - its not going to break anything - and I wouldn't yell at the devs for deciding to add it, or any smugglers for campainging for it.

[And as to the double slicing, you're not gonna convince me, even if I *was* for beefed up slice tags, that the implementation of any more detailed tags help identifying these weps at all. My money would probably be on the devs taking the easy code path and just showing info from the last slice regardless. So I really don't see that as a valid argument for changing the tags.]

For reference, here's the initial discussion on the slice tag as it appears now:

IT 7-10: Sliced Weapon Tag and Publish 7 Feedback: Sliced Weapon Tag

i'm sure there's some threads from theis board too, but i only seached the dev archive

Well I don't care much about having my name plastered on the side of every weapon I illegally modified, but I would like to see the percentages as well.. I know I've brought this up in the slicing tag thread, but I think it was pre-correspondent.

The name though... unless it was skill based slicing and every person was different with varied materials and such causing a different effect... nah...

Why would that matter? The idea of a Smuggler is to be covert.
