Thread: A Smuggler's Guide to Manufacturing
- If you're already an artisan, you know how to survey. If you don't have artisian, get a friend to point you to a high concentration of metal.
- Deploy your harvester
- Use the radial menu to pay maintenance and deposit power (power can be obtained like any other resource) under the Structure Management menu.
- Now go to Operate Machinery. Click the 'Change Resource' button to pick what you want to harvest. Then click 'Turn On Harvester'. Check back later (days) to pick up your resource.
How ya gonna make it?
Now that you have your ingredients assembled, you're going to need a factory schematic. For any of the items you have in your datapad, you can create your own schematic. To do this, you will need a crafting tool-- 'Weapon, Droid, and General Item' for slicing gear, 'Food and Chemical' for spices. Since we can't currently experiment, and quality means nothing, then you can buy the first ones you find. I found both of these tools on the bazaar, so they were cheap.
Next, you'll need to find a crafting station. These can be found in NPC towns and are generally hard to miss. You don't actually do anything with them. You just have to be standing next to them. Of course, there are different types so make sure you're standing next to the one that matches the tool you're using.
Now just go through the crafting process as normal. After step 3, you'll get a new screen giving you a choice of: 'Experiment', 'Create a Prototype Item', or 'Create Manufacturing Schematic'. Experimentation does nothing for smugglers at this point and creating a prototype item is what we always do. Obviously, we're picking the third choice. Here is where you can give your item a new name and pick the number you want on the schematic. This is also why we needed 16,016 units of the same metal. We just used 16 units making the schematic, we'd like to make 1,000 in the factory, and we now have enough ingredients for that run.
Click the 'Create Object' button and don't panic because you don't see it. The schematic shows up in your datapad under the 'Data'tab -- not in your inventory and not under the 'Draft Schematics' tab.
This is also where it is nice to have friends who are weapon and/or armorsmiths. They can make weapon and armor upgrade kit schematics for you. You'll need 20 metal and 10 chemical for either WUKs or AUKs. Again, you'll want to gather your own ingredients and give them to the smith to make sure the schematic matches the ingredients you have.
Where ya gonna make it?
Now you're ready to start cookin'. First off, you'll need a factory. Find an architect vendor and purchase an 'Equipment Factory' for slicing gear or a 'Food Factory' for spices.
- Deploy your factory.
- Under 'Structure Management', deposit power and pay maintenance (see harvesting).
- Under 'Options, select 'Access schematic slot'. Pick the schematic you want to manufacture -- the Laser Knife in our case. Click 'Use Schematic'.
- Go back to'Options', then select 'Access station ingredient hopper'. This will open a new window. Drag and drop the ingredients (16,000 metal in this case) into this window and close it. You can verify that you have the correct ingredients by selecting 'List ingredients needed for station.'
- Click 'Start manufacturing objects' button under 'Options' and go away. You'll get an email when the factory stops.
That about does it.
At this point, you should be well on your way to mass-production. Not only do you no longer need to buy your slicing gear. In fact, you can start supplying other smugglers, giving you that air of being a legitimate business owner. Please let me know if there was anything I missed or misstated.

Fixed two errors dealing with harvesters. Thanks Krite.

QFE
um...isn't this IN the Smuggler FAQ?
I coulda sworn Kav included that in the original version...or Caylin added it in on one of the revisions...
At any rate...like Ragu spaghetti sause...IT'S IN THERE!

So it is. Now if only people would learn to read the stickies.
I thought I searched through the 'helpful links' section and didn't find anything about mass production. FAQs on spices, grinding, macros, etc -- but I didn't see anything detailing the use of factories, etc. Maybe I just missed it. *shrug*

- Power doesn't have to be of the same type, can put many different types in structures that require it (or am I just the lucky one?)
- You don't get an email if your harvester stops (unlessthis changed very recently which would be fantastic)
- Don't see where the weaponsmiths/armorsmiths come in to this
Thanks for the notes. I'll recheck these this afternoon.

- You don't get an email if your harvester stops (unlessthis changed very recently which would be fantastic) I may have confused this with factories. I'll check this also.
- Don't see where the weaponsmiths/armorsmiths come in to this They come in the bit where I talk about schematics. The only way a smuggler can manufacture these kits is to get the schematic from someone else.
