I might have noticed why the forum has a different attitude.
Way back when we use to have about 3-5 "Made it to master" posts a week. These posts would get people to post and be nice to the smugglers welcoming them to the community. Well... With the hologrind out of the question the number of people mastering smugglers dropped, so the community started to lose new recruits.
We still get masters, more so rare; but they're still coming in to post their accomplishments.
Someone made comment about how the tone of the smuggler forum has changed as of late... Well in my opinion it has only for the reasons of the idiot jedi and BH screwing over FD and so forth. I stay away from those posts and try to only get involved in posts that would reflect a happy outcome, such as welcoming new people to the community.
I don't really know if I've made any sense or not. In conclusion, the lack of new masters I believe to be linked to the "dry" atmosphere of the forum. But I wouldn't say thats it because the forum itself I see as of late getting more masters and abetter attitude.

P.S. I just woke up and may not be thinking straight.

I just mastered smuggler for the 2nd time 3 days ago. Why? Because i wanted to
I like being able to buy my own faction items cheaper.
I like being able to slice my armor and weapons for free.
I like not having to hunt down a smuggler for FP or to get my items sliced.
I like being able to slice armor people buy from me for free.
I like getting the extra % off faction items.
I like being able to sell FP to rebels, or fellow imperials.
I like being able to use detonation droids.
I like being able to open locked containers soon as i loot them.
I like being able to make my own spice- though i dont use a lot of it.
I do not like the fact we dont do what we were meant to do.
I do not like the fact FD is being used by people other than smugglers.
Few other areas i dislike, but i got smuggler for the reasons i wanted.
Smuggler has its good points, and its bad points. Im not sure why everyone is crying about the profession. I mean we arent "smugglers" but there is a lot we can still do.

Smuggler strikes me as one of those professions that is only retained by the faithful -- those who want to be Smugglers... not Uber.
But what do I know, I'm a Smuggler/Ranger.

Can't agree with you more man. I like smuggler 'cause it gives you a little flava of everything. Combat, crafting, and service. There are so many ways to make money. The extra money from the terminals comes in handy. There is always a demand for slicing. We can turn junk resources into useful stuff. The way I see it we got a lot more going for us than some clases.

Considering that most smuggling was probably done in space, that would leave smugglers to be basically "thugs" on the ground, which is almost exactly what this profession keys out to be.
I, however, would like this thugish aspect developed more through the NPC environment, criminal themeparks, and player criminal factions and towns. I envision this to be easily and most enjoyable patterned off the game Grand Theft Auto, whose game style is extremely open ended, fun, and incredibly replayable.
To me, nothing compliments being a criminal quite like the mindset, "I can do whatever I want to bad. What am I going to mess up next???". It is the GTA system that really nutures this mindset, and one that I feel will beautifully compliment OUR profession.
Keep your minds open! It would be a blast!
(Disclaimer:I know a good deal of smugglers like more of a classy way of doing business than just being a "thug". You can use the open ended game style of GTA to be that too!)

Getting back to the original point, the PvP dudes will always think this game is about them. They'll always come here and try to assert their muscle. Don't know much about the FD issue except the power PvPers hate it and think it is an exploit.
I think there are a lot of things thatcan be interpreted to beexploits. Buffbots, stacking, etc. to name a few. The difference between an exploit thata peep thinks is legitand one that becomes a critical issue is how it affectsthe peep'spersonal game. I'm sure the musicians and dancers could care less about FD, but they are real concerned about buffbots. The PvPers think buffbots are legit, but see FD as an unbalance.
For us, all I gotta say is that nobody really has any hardcore hate against us. You should see the kind of flak the docs get 'cause of the way buffs are becomming such an important thing. Same with CMs a while back 'cause of poo chuckin'. Even the squad leaders get their share of hate 'cause of spam in cities.
But who really hates a smuggler? Not many, and when they do hate us its for roleplay reasons. We are the seedy underbelly of the galaxy who talk with Jawas and other nefarious dudes. I like that role and I play it as best I can.
And I am proud to be a smuggla'!
