He was always tinkering with the Millenium Falcon, but it never worked right. Maybe that means he just wasn't a smuggler/shipwright. Who knows?

In his defense though, some of the times the hyperdrive didn't work was because of tampering. So it wasn't always his fault. We can also blame Chewie a little too.
