Had this idea while fading off to sleep. Figured I'd throw it out and see what happened. I think the possibility is pretty good and I feel implementaion can't be too hard. Worste case scenario is that it gets people thinking.

Slicing Revamp
(or Making Slicing a skill)

Issue: Despite the investiture of 121 skill points, the Master Smuggler is not a master of his craft. Specifically in dealing with Slicing the Master Smuggler is incapable of guaranteeing his client a specific high quality service. Instead the smuggler is forced tosubmit to a 50/50 chance of making his customer happy and then risks poor quality results in the end slice.

Issue: Currently, Artisans are capable of providing a service that guarantees weapon enhancements that consistently match and exceed a smuggler's slicewith guaranteed results. (Though I do not feel this should be removed as its a major income source for artisans I do feel it must be noted that the PuP system is effectively a Weapon Buff)

Issue: Many smugglers desire the ability to pick a slice style (namely damage/ speed).

Proposal: Allow MASTER Smugglers to use PuPs in the slicing procedure to create perma slices within the following system:

Implentation:

  1. Using a WUK and PuP a Master Smuggler is granted the ability to augment a weapon permanently. Namely, within the slicing procedure the Smuggler is given thechoice to permanently attach a PuP to a weapon.

  2. This newly sliced weapon can not be sliced beyond this permanent upgrade.

  3. This newly sliced weapon cannot be given an additional PuP after the Master Slice. (maybe give the weapon a permanent PuP marker)

  4. The weapon is considered sliced by all Crackdown specifications.

Result: Smugglers are granted a chosen slice result that does not "overpower" a given weapon. (the slice is restricted to one bonus and loses the ability to recieve additional bonuses from PuPs)

Result: The Smugglers have a new highly marketable skill that enhances weapons and grants players a more secure definitive slicing experience with Masters.

Result: Artisan's are given another market for the PuPs.

Result:Slices done by Non Master Smugglers still have a chance of better results and the bonus of having PuP usage allowing them an equally profitable Market.

Thanks for reading.

Well, the whole point of a powerup is that they're limited-use.

Using this method a powerup would be made permenant. EVERYONE would have asmuggler permentantly slicing powerups onto their weapons, and the limited-use aspect of the powerups would go away. So it would not add a new source of revenue,it wouldreplace the current one with this one. Eventually all weapons in the game would get permenant powerups attached to them and there would be no need for new powerups unless weapons were decayed/destroyed/etc...

There are missions in which you "deliver an item while hostiles attack you" in every profession. I still don't consider [Smuggler's Alliance] pilots to be Smugglers, nor 'Smuggling' - at least not any more than Rebel Pilots or Imperial Pilots might sometimes "smuggle", with a lower-case s - JFreeman - 10/6/04

The idea would be that a player would have two options. Visiting a Master Smuggler they could ask to risk a random slice and then still have the ability to PuP a weapon, or they could have a permanent PuP applied and not be able to slice or PuP the weapon further. Here's an example.

Imaginary Rifle 1: 5.5spd 10- 100 damage

  1. Add a permanent 34% Pup to damage: 5.5spd 13- 134dmg and have no further adjustments available.

  2. Randomly slice the rigle (get a 29% damage result): 5.5spd 12- 129dmg and be able to PuP it to a 5.5spd 16- 172dmg

  3. Randomly slice the rifle (get a 30%spd): 3.3spd 10- 100dmg and be able to PuP to 13- 134 damage.

Obviously the random slice allows for better results, but for players looking for a definite guaranteed bonus... players looking for a guaranteed %34 damage on their gun... the permananet PuP is the way to go. For the random slice the PuP is still marketable and the Master Smuggler will always have a need for PuPs to make the adjustments.

Another option might be to have a different PuP item created that was for this purpose. Maybe granting higher percentages and allowing a competative market against the dual bonus of PuP and random slice... just a thought.

Anyway like I said just a thought.

Aaah, I see what you're saying now.

I think if this were to be used, the powerup that can attach to your weapon permenantly should be around 25%. That's a good average number in the 15-35% range.

This way, a customer could take the random 15-35%, hoping they get above 25% on the slice, or they can take a guaranteed 25%, and avoid having a slice below 25%.

Otherwise, the best powerups would get made, and everyone would want that guaranteed 34% slice on their weapon.
