does slicing require any extra components... or is it just weapon and the appropriate tool?

To be precise, weapon slicing requires a minimum of a Precision Laser Knife with at least two charges, a Weapon Upgrade Kit(WUK), and a weapon. If you want to be certain the weapon slice does not fail, then you'll need a Molecular Clamp and the ability to read what is in the popup text. I may sound harsh when I say that, but you won't believe how many people ignore what is in that box thinking that the clamp lets you cut any wire with impunity.

Armor works the same way, except you need an Armor Uprgrade Kit(AUK) instead of a WUK.

The lowdown on the grind throug Slicing is this.

Novice -> Slicing 1: 20 Containers
Slicing 1 -> Slicing 2: 40 Containers or 100 terminal slices(terminals are only worth 100 points, while weapons, armor, and containers are 250 each)
Slicing 2 -> Slicing 3: 100 weapons and containers total, *or* 250 terminal slices
Slicing 4 -> Slicing 4: 200 Weapons, armor pieces, or containers total, or 500 terminal slices.

Stick with slicing weapons armor, and containers to get through, and only slice terminals when neccisary.

Tip: To speed up the slicing process, stand near a mission terminal if you do any slicing containers for free spam. And while no one is around/no one needs containers sliced, slice terminals(Don't waste clamps since you can't make them yet, just cut the red wire and hope its the right one) for bonus xp every two minutes. Also, every time you run missions from a terminal, slice it for some xp and an increased pay out while leveling, however, you do run the risk of increasing the difficulty of the MOBs at the mission.

I can answer this...

Smuggler is fun as long as you realize that it has big gaps in the skill tree and wont get revamped until next year. Gaps defined as a lot o skill points with no new skills.

Its fun if you consider that despite thousands and thousands of accumulated pistol experiance you get absolutly no increase in skill with the weapon. You gain new specials, which are pretty good but due to the lack of any ability to damage the mind pool you will at best be a speed bump in any pvp encounter. Oh you might get in a lucky knock down or two but thats about it.

It is fun if you believe that at master level its ok that your expertise in slicing leads to completely random results. Every-single-time.

Its fun if you believe that grinding out thousands of units of spice is ok to get to the point that you can make the 2 types that people ...***occasionally use***.

Its fun as long as you believe that Roleplaying is the way to go, because as a Master Smuggler you will Never actually "Smuggle" anything.

So in short if you think all of that stuff is "Fun" then smuggler is for you.

I call it Frustrating.

But thats just me.

Yes and no.

Sure getting there can be rather rough - a lot of pistol xp to get with no particularly great moves and no mods. Plus the unarmed requirement - redundant to your char but that 70k to unarmed IV is a bit of a slog.

The crafting isnt too bad. Had me worried, incorrectly it turned out.

And yes, the prof is pretty broken and lots of promises were made that never came to fruition (and you should not hold your breath)

So why play?

For me, it is back to the MMORPG part. Spent more time talking to people as a Smuggler, no more "solo groups", more interaction with other players. You can RP. You get more communication. It is fun/frustrating/hilarious/fascinating to deal with other players. I suppose it is a social role to play which is why I felt drawn to it.

But if you want to fight/hunt/loot you will need something else in your template.

Think about what you want from the game I guess.

Is smuggler fun? Good question. It isnt really a very good combat profession since we get no accuracy or speed bonuses to our pistol skills. Not a good pvp profession since we cant hit defense stacker FOTM people.

But do I enjoy it?
Yes.
Would I ever give it up?
No.
Why?
The 'Chuckle for the Smuggler' thread is all true - every day you get to interface with the dumbest people alive, and laugh at them (behind their backs, at least).

Also, if you consider "fun" to mean the same as "rich", try master commando + master smuggler. Nothing quite like torching an entire group of Jantas in under 10 seconds to get your sliced terminal payout of about 50k (plus selling the crystals and Janta blood). With a large solo group and someone helping me pull missions I can easily make about a million per three hour buff session. Not to mention Last Ditch using a nice Launcher Pistol really hurts, if you can hit your target.
