Hi all,
Been out of things for about 8 months and picked the game back up. Decided to start fresh with a smuggler and I'm trying to decide on a non-combat profession to dabble or master in on the side.I ended up mastering medic just healing myself and others after space adventures, but see no real reason to keep it when all I really need is the novice box. Was thinking about picking up weaponsmith or possibly bussinessman. Any suggestions for a side job? Thanks.

Well, Armour smith, Weapon Smith and Merchant are three good choices, be it to make your own sliced weapons and armour and/or to sell them on, or just to sell Smuggler tools and spice. There is of course the tripple master template that's quite popular(Smuggler, TKA and Pistoleer), although given that's all combat I'm guessing that's not what you're after.
Other than that, it's really down to your own tastes. You could for example try taking up an elite entertainer profession, it's really down to what you enjoy

It all depends what your interests are. If you want to make money, you could go into resourcing, and get artisan 0040 to have 2 vendors and sell in a shop somewhere, using your lots for harvesters. You can make a good amount of money doing this and it usually leaves you time and skill pointsto run around and do other things.
You could also do Smuggler/Musician or Smuggler/Dancer if you were into entertaining and socializing.
Or, you could pick any of the crafting profs and master one of them. Mastering weaponsmith or armorsmith and you could make a tidy profit selling sliced weapons or armor that you made yourself. 30+ damage sliced weapons usually bring in a good haul.
I was Master Smuggler/Master Tailor for a while till I realised that I was not making a lot of money compared to the amount of work I was doing, and that I spent more time making clothes for me than customers. I've gone back to full combat now. Most people go with the triple master of Smuggler/Pistoleer/TKM, I've gone with Master Smuggler/Pistoleer 0040/Bounty Hunter 0040/Novice Commando. I'm not a PvPer so I like being the master of pistols for PvE. It works quite well for me.

I've been thinking of maybe adding Shipwright once I'm done with Pilot, to go with Master Smuggler.
But I may have to give up too many skills to do it, have to play around with the numbers once.

The danger of Master Shipwright is that you need a stunning whack of resources - if you decide to go this route then immediately start stocking up on Steel, Ore, Aluminum, Fiberplast, Inert Polymer, Iron (with Emphasis on Steel then Ore).
Good Luck!

I have a second account with a Wookie I was working up DE, so I know the trial and erros of Artisan and the need for Resources. I was going to use the second account for shipwright, but I just can't afford having 2 SWG and 1 WoW account.

I would suggest not doing shipwright... its not worth the time and money it takes to master it. If you were not master within the first week of JTL, well you never going to sell ships. Most of the parts you can make can't compair to the loot or RE'd loot. The grind for SW is the worst on in the game, most crafting professions you can average a 2 exp per resource used, but shipwright everything you can make gives you 0.25 exp per resource.... I took up this profession on an alt and between using my own extractors and paying friends to set some up I spent over 4 million alone on resources. So unless you have the funding I would suggest you go armorsmith or weaponsmith to make money.
If you can't tell I loved the grind to master shipwright......

I was going to go Smuggler/Commando, but I was thinking after I make a few more mill that I'd retire from heavy combat, and go Smuggler/Musician. I spend inordinate amounts of time in cantinas anyway, and if I've got the itch to fight I can hop in my ship and blast things to my heart's content. I know I'd be damming myself to be both a slicewhore and a buffwhore, but ah well, what can ya do.

I have kept busy all kinds of ways that seemed smugglerish...
Buying and reselling force crystals
Trying to run a betting company
Buying and reselling loot kit parts
Fencing rarities my guildies find
Pitching in on Player Quests
Directing an in-game Play
just to name a few, and most of these (aside from the bookie business) paid off rather well.
Ya just gotta think creatively.
