Thread: Can pure Smugglers defend themselves?

One of the really popular suggestions I've seen thrown around lately is Smugglers want to be hunted by player Bounty Hunters. While I think this idea is really intriguing, I wonder how pure Smugglers ( no other combat skills others than the Brawler/Marksmen pre-reqs and Smuggler itself would fair in such an environment. As I see it, a pure Smuggler would be toast each and everytime he/she came up against a Bounty Hunter. Smuggler by itself is fairly useless in PvP. Even when coupled with other combat skill boxes, Smuggler is fairly limited - when compared with "true" combat professions.

If this change is to be seriously considered by the Dev team, will they take into account that pure Smugglers need improved PvP abilities? Or will they approach it from the point of view that most if not all Smugglers have also mastered a real combat profession?

supposedly the smuggler revamp is going to allow smugglers to 'slip away' from combat much easier. mind you that isnt coming until september-october............

I truly doubt that the devs will make the smuggler profession strong enough to go head to head with a bounty hunter. The only way Ican see smugglers going toe to toe is with an improved dirty fighting tree.Withought improved dirty fightingyou will have to have other professions ie pistoleer and tka just to be able to hold your own. Now don't forget about the combat revamp. I wonder how this will effect the entire game play let alone smugglers fighting bounty hunters.

Now the notion of slipping away is cool but who wants to slip away all the time. I don't know about you all but if I got the upper hand I will definately want to stomp something.

Slipping away is exceedingly usefull! If you have a fair amount of Pistoleer, ask yourself when the last time you used a smuggler offensive special was. Odds are, it's been a while. I see the change in focus from a mix of offense and defense to pure drfense as a good thing. If you arent backing smuggler with combat professions, you realy dont want to be in combat for very long anyway. If you are backing it with combat proffessions, then deffensive "slip away" tactics can give you theupper hand to choose when you end a fight. In PvE that can mean time to break off and regroup/heal, and in PvP, the one who lives wins- if you can get away from a bad situation or killer opponent, you live to make annother credit.... though with PvP death as it stands now, living or dieing is fairly inconsequentialto a Master Smuggler.

Keep in mind the one thing the developers have to be wary of... any changes to the melee portion of our tree will just increase TKA dabbling (similar to what the Pistoleers do with the Rogue line). If they give an amazing unarmed attack, it will just be used by TKAs (or complained about and nerfed by them...). If they give the dirty fighting line any special pistol moves it will just be used by Pistoleers, etc.

Ummm, isnt that the point of skill trees? Dabbeling is not a bad thing, if the devs didn't want us to dabble they should have a class system and not ta skill system.

One possible way to conteract non-smuggler dabbling - with the addition of new Smuggler specific combat moves in Dirty Fighting, also add Smuggler only weapons certs, in the Underworld line. The new moves can only be performed when usingthe new weapons. If a player wants to use the moves in Dirty Fighting, they will have tospend skill points in Underworld and Dirty Fighting.

I had this idea yesterday after someone mentioned a "debuffing" move. I thought to myself, Hey self, you're a gambling kinda smuggler. Obviously you wouldn't want to get into a fight you knew you were going to lose. But wouldn't you jump at the chance for a moderately even match.

The idea was, at Master to have a "standoff" special, one that would debuff your more powerful opponent to even the score. Now, the system behind it would be complex, so I doubt it could ever be implimented. Basically the special would be a one-use move that would drop an opponant's HAM proportionally so that the smuggler's buff+weapon power would be equal to the opponant's HAM+weapon power. In a BH situation, since their weapons are more powerful than an FWG (standard smuggler sidearm unless novice pistoleer) getting hit by the special would even out the fight. As such, it would give the smuggler a chance to ask "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Not meant to be a spammed, uber-attack. Basically just leveling the playing field some.

Sounds interesting, but the Dev team will essentially be blowing up the HAM bars as we know them. I can live with being able to slip away though, I never asked to be the baddest mo'fo' on the block...but with all that Pistol exp, I darn sure dont wont to be the weakest.
