Technically, in SWG a privateer would need to work for the Empire. A neutral or rebel privateer would simply be lumped in with the rebels. It is probably just semantics but that may not be the most appropriate title for that profession.
Historically, privateers are civillians that have been given license by a state (England comes to mind) to raid enemy vessels for loot. I cannot see neutral pilots raiding Imperial ships without being classified as a rebel. I can't really see neutrals raiding Rebel ships without being classified as an Imperial.
Now a Hutt faction pilot would fit the privateer role nicely.
That makes a lot more sense than what I was thinking. I couldn't quite see how a privateer could end up being sanctioned and neutral.

They're using Privateer in the Wing Commander sense: i.e. one who owns his or her own ship and makes money transporting goods for profit. In this case, a privateer would not be aligned with either the Imperials or the Rebels, though it may be possible to perform missions for either (for example, delivering bacta to a rebel gathering point after a bad battle like in XWA).

I'm kind of bummed, personally. I'm an Imperial smuggler in an Imperial guild. I can handle not being able to fly TIEs (devs have stated that the pilot trees will be exclusive, ie somebody who goes up the Privateer line cannot go up the Rebel/Imperial line) if I want to fly "Merc" craft...but now I'm going to have to resign my imperial commision to do it. Which means FP sales go bye-bye.
So essentially if you want to be a smuggler-ish pilot then you can't even sell FP anymore. It would make sense that Smugglers should get a little love in the respect of being able to hop over to the neutral tree as an Imperial or Rebelsoldier...but I know SOE well enough to know that there's no way that's gonna happen.
I think you may be reading more in here than has been said so far. One statement that was made was that the in-space factions would mirror the current factions. SO, as a covert, I plan on taking the 'Privateer' path. Now, they haven't said how they plan on handling coverts in space yet. The obvious solutions would be similar to faction perks - you can only use your TIE when overt. I don't recall seeing that Imp Pilots HAVE to fly Ties, but we are way early in the process to worry about getting scrooged.
I'm COMPLETELY jazzed that I might not have to give up my template (Master Smuggler dabbling in Medic, Pistoleer, Rifleman & Commando) in order to complete a pilot profession! The last statement I read was that space skills may have their own pool....cool...everyone can fly...

I too am saddened that we need to give up our professions in order to become pilots. That is just going to hurt our ability flesh our out characters as we want. Now instead of being a Master Smuggler/Commando, I am going to have to give up Commando in order to pick up pilot skills. What about Bounty Hunters, thereare certainly not enough skill points left over for them to pick up pilot skills, andthis KILLS the "star warsy" atmosphere, as many BH's were also pilots (they had to track down there bounties!)
Just curious... where did they say that you HAVE to take the pilot path that corresponds to your faction... My impression was that as a Rebel I could take the Rebel Pilot path OR the Privateer path...
