Here's an idea, let smugglers actually smuggle 0_0 How about at the combat rebalance you put an extra restriction on travel. Put in a "custom's official" Any traveler who tries to take a shuttle or starship out of the starport or shuttleport gets fined if they have drugs on them unless it's carried in a special container made by smugglers to let you slip through customs. These containers could be limited to about 5 slots and non smugglers could only be allowed to have one at a time. Also, spice could be excluded as a valid item for vendors or the bazaar. If you want spice, you have to find a smuggler to get it from, afterall, spice is illegal, it shouldn't be sold on vendors and the bazaar. This would give smugglers control of the spice trade, which is exactly how it should be !! My reasoning for five slots in the smuggling container is because non-smugglers shouldn't be able to move large quantities of spice, and 5 slots is enough for 4 factory crates and one single unit of spice, that's plenty for any character's personal use.

One perfectly excellent idea! Publish 11 is a smuggler revamp maybe the devs will consider adding this to it.

That might be a blessing.

Edit : Sorry. Post not harsh enough. Any chance that you could get it into your thick skull that having sliced weaponry and armour, and illicit spices is against the law and should be find heavily. That's what smuggling is about.

In fact whilst Im against the idea of smugglers crafting containers ( Droid Engineers currently do that ) the idea that it would make you quit actually makes it more tempting.

That's a new idea. All the ones I've heard before involve the smuggler taking something from one place to another -- but what if someone doesn't really want to give the stuff over? After all, we've already got smugglers who'll take your stuff and run. And if we're supposed to be able to help other people avoid scans, this seems like a good start.

It's not perfect, but it's definitely a good start.

That's a pretty cool idea.

Maybe you couldn't put illegal stuff at all if you didn't have one of these containers.

gusguhost.... why would u come in here and theaten to leave a game in our boards obout our profession? as far as im concerned... anything that makes you NOT want to be play the game is a plus with the kind of attitude you have.

too many people want this game to be easy just so they can conquer it and move on to another game. I don't think SOE had that in mind when they DEV'ed it . Part of the allure to the game, is how complicated it is and how many variables are involved.

I wish all the people with the same attitude you apparently have would go play an FPS or something. Thats easy and if you die... you just respawn with no consequences.

Since the posts have started to get more ...reasonable....let me tell you why I think the idea is bad.

At the moment we have exactly this system in play. A droid storage compartment can be used to evade all scans. It's not an intended feature but it does show you what will happen.

All of us agree....( OK, it's clear that some people don't understand about the need for illegal items and fines in a game ) that carrying illegal items should be harshly punished. What do you think would happen if they increased the fines for carrying a sliced weapon by 1000% ?

Correct. People would just buy more storage droids.

What you are proposing is that a smuggler craft an item that helps people avoid those fines. Very few of us smugglers want to be crafters as it stands and we would prefer that we smuggled spices into the general population then by creating them ourselves and you are proposing that we craft more.

To add to that once the item is created, we then have no work. We wont be smugglers then. The general populace will be the smugglers and we will be the packing clerks. Still, when they are new at least we'll have something to sell wont we? Not when you consider the anount of people out there with smuggler alts that will happily run off factory crates of these things for the lowest possible price.

If this idea is put into the game the smuggling profession will lose all hope.

Here's an answer to the smuggler running off with the goods...hire a Bounty Hunter! The idea does have promise. The Good smugglers who deliver the items will get a good rep and more jobs and more money. The Bad smugglers will show up on the BH boards and will have tofear for his/lher life at all times. The BH'ers keep busy and get paid, smugglers do what they should, smuggle, and clients get their illegal items where they want them. Sounds like win-win all the way around. Debate?

Um. Because that stuff is ILLEGAL? Try boarding a plane today with a couple of pounds of cocaine, or maybe a fully-automatic assault rifle. Gonna get fined? Well, no. But I bet something happens...

Er.. sorry to break this to you, but the Revamp is not publish 11, it's post-JTL. We're likely to see no changes (bar tweaks to Dirty Fighting in the CB) to smuggler until then.

It's all about checks and balances, something that SOE is woefully incapable of mastering.

First and foremost, they have to find a balance on the contraband. If they make the fines for carrying illegal weapons and spices too heavy, but not make the benefits worth the risk, then we'd really be out of business in the slicing and spicing area. As it stands right now, everyone can carry sliced weapons with minimal penalty at being caught. I mean, I get a lot of weapons that are already sliced some of the time. And spices? They're not even worth picking up, let alone carrying if the consequences of carrying items are upped.

On the other side of the ledger, if they do not make the crackdowns harder, then what's the purpose of our bonus to avoiding scans? I like the idea of getting scanned at Starports, but it can get tedious. If we're used as essentially storage units to help get past customs, that's not really smuggling. Alright, I haven't given this much thought... but I'd like to see Underworld like this. I don't honestly have a tree structure, but what we should be able to do is...

* Talk our way out of Imperial scans without losing FP or paying a fine.
* Create some kind of false identification papers for players to use. It could negate a bounty and/or remove a TEF flag when initiated. They could not be used in combat, but if, like a Jedi, had a bounty on them, they could use the papers when they force the BH to clone and ditch him. It would also be good if you've got a TEF and you didn't want any trouble if you ran across some Rebs or Imps on the way out.
* Buying and selling FP is excellent and should be kept. I'm not entirely sure about cutting the overall faction cost, however it would explain our ability to get our hands on faction perks (can you say AT-ST anyone) for a good price. I would probably tweak the conversion rates, though. They're kind of sucky.
* Conceal contraband for individuals. Much like false ID papers, it would be an item or something that gets burnt when they're scanned at spaceports and what not.

And a lot of this, with the exception of spices, shouldn't be creatable using a factory. They'd actually have to come to us. If our smuggler stuff (tools and spices aside) could be created in factories, I picture vendors like in Family Guy. Welcome to the Black Market, blue light special in aisle 9 on sliced scatter pistols.

The whole not taking a lesser penalty for PvP is absolutely useless, because we're not designed to do PvP yet anyway.

He's right. GCW is slated for Publish 11 and won't be implemented until January 2005 through March 2005. Everything else on their plate is Publish 10 and JTL. So you probably will not be seeing any Smuggler revamp for another year, at least. I just kind of figured that out after reading their 'In Concept' page. Just because it says Smuggler Revamp under Publish 11 GCW, doesn't mean that the revamp will be in Publish 11. Those tricky developers.
