First off, I have been in the shadows here for a little while, and read on and off. I have to many forums to read with my two characters. However, I did see something I agreed with. Slicing weapons is fine and dandy. We SHOULD be able to pick WHAT we want to slice. Speed, damage, maybe even increase the ideal range. After all, it's just either changing out the stock equipment, or modifing it with illegal stuff.
Armor though. Have you ever worn armor in rl? I have. Both for work (Corrections officer, and I have to wear a stab vest where I work), and medeviel recreation. Let me tell you, if you take away ANY padding, that armor can cause some nasty rashes. For encumbrance, that is really all you do is take out padding, or remove other sections. This SHOULD reduce the protection, and thus destroy the purpose. What smugglers COULD do is increase the effectiveness, or even increase the armor rating. From light, to medium, or maybe even heavy. How you ask, but simply coating the armor in a stronger material that hardens, and or adding other armor pieces to cover areas. Having worn armor before, I can tell you that doing so would make moving harder, or increasing the encumbrance. THAT is a realistic (Wait, we are playing a game, set in the future...don't think, don't think) nature of 'slicing' armor.
We should be able to choose what we want to change on weapons, how well it's changed should be random. After all, you won't beable to do the exact same job all the time.
As for armor, that should stay random as to if it's effectiveness, or armor rating, or if not. The armor rating should be real hard to do. The amount of change should be random too. It's a risk. How well did the coating/modification take?
Just a thought I had tonite while playing...now, back to killing swoopers, and see if I can get more pistol speed loot.

Slicing in itelf is screwed up in Galaxies.
In all the SW Books, Slicing is basically dealing with computer systems and data.
In Galaxies, it's equipment modification... armor shouldn't be sliceable, None of it is powered. Then again, so should all non powered weapons, and all melee powered weapons should only be damage sliceable...
Slicing needs a sanity check... and a full revamp. Throw in a system like System Shock 2's hacking, allow smugglers to illegally alter powered weapons, vehicles, terminals, locks, and give them the ability to strip down electronics for parts and hack together things, like one use explosives...
/me dreams of a smuggler revamp that'll never happen, at least not in any sane way

Yah I think its silly that I can make a wood stick or stone knife attack faster using little electonic gadgets.

Now that was a slick game. Scared the crap out of me, first time one of those zombies came at me from out of no where. Of course, I was playing late at night, with the lights off, and the sound turned up.I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

I loved SS2, I know exactly what you are talking about. One of my all-time favorites and I too want slicing to be interactive as you would see there...

in JTL we should be the ones running to the back of the yt-1300 to get a lil' more out of the engines or shields.
We saw Han Chewie doing this all the time.

Yeah, but imagine how many times we're going to be asked to slice someone's ship!
Customer - "Dude, I want speed!"
Smuggler - "Sorry, 14% damage"

/agree 100%
If we aint flying the darn things, give a role to smugglers to help 'tweak' them a bit while in combat or some other activity.
