Hey all,
This just crossed my mind for no particular reason and I thought I'd write it out.
In the past we've discussed experimentation having an effect on slicing tools, and experimenting during the act of slicing itself, etc. Consider for a moment the opposite direction: taking all the crafting out of Smuggler.
(Some or all of this has probably been said before, forgive me)
I think we as a profession would be much better off if we obtained our slicing tools as mission rewards rather than having to mine resources and craft them. Both in game and in the development process, distancing ourselves from the crafting process will probably benefit us tremendously. We wouldn't have to worry about the time and money sink of mining resources and factory producing tools, and we also wouldn't be affected by any future changes to the crafting system. Finally we would focus more on doing Smuggling missions instead of resource gathering/crafting, which is more in tune with our desire to "smuggle".
The last benefit of getting out of the crafting game would be that we wouldn't be subject to the same market forces as crafters (which favor the legacy crafters/resource gatherers) and our services would be valued because of the risk we endure to obtain the tools (the missions) rather than because of the resources that go into the tools (which are minimal and unaffected by quality, which is a factor that contributes to the low value of slicing).
That's it, just thought I'd toss that out there.

I would prefer if the quality of resources and instruments used in crafting actually had an affect on the tools and spices produced.
For example, if you used prime resources and tools to make the best possible laser knifes that were guaranteed at Master to ALWAYS slice at a MINIMUM of 30% then wouldn't it be worth it? Couldn't you advertise that and get 10K a slice? This would give you something to actually be able to control the randomness of your slicing percentage. Plus, you should be able to stack things - great knife, great clamp - MINUMUM of 35%.
Same would go for spices - spices with good resources are better, last longer, have less of a downer or some mix of that based on the components. Hey, if you could make neutron pixies out of prime resources that only had a 30 second or 1 minute downer - I think I could move that.
