First of all you need to make some Precision Laser Knives. These will let you cut the wires. You should have the schematic for them in your datapad. Or you can buy them off the bazaar.
Then the best thing to do is get some crates of Molecular Clamps. You can't make these until you have slicing 4, so you'll have to buy some or find a Master Smuggler on your server who's very nice and might give them to you.
Then when you slice the container, apply a clamp first (you'll need to take one and a knife out of their crates before you start). The clamp will always tell you the 100% correct wire to cut first.
Simple as that.
As for Spices, you need to make Shadowpaw. Make it on the practice setting on your General crafting tool. Not sure exactly what you need to make it off hand (think it's a metal and an organic, like meat). Best thing is to get 2 or 3 general crafting tools and then just start making. Move from tool to tool, so that you're not always waiting for the tool to make the item before you can continue - you just keep going in a loop.
Other than that, I'm sure there are some marvellous insights from more skilled Smugglers than me in the stickies at the top of the forum.
Good Luck

Yes, do read the FAQ about how to slice.
And here's what i have to add about how to _grind_ the slice branch:
Go to the Lucky Despot in Mos Eisley. Next to that is an area where there are two NPC loot spawns; usually these produce Jabba, Valerian, and Swoop types of NPC enemies. Fight the ones you can kill the easiest. Loot them carefully, as they can overwhelm you if you're not smart about it. Use a pistol as this will help toward the smuggler pistol XP.
You will loot lots of stuff, some useful, some junk. Keep ALL weapons and locked containers. Fill your inventory up with as many sliceable items as you can. You might also loot some GOOD items like skill tapes so examine unfamiliar items carefully.
When your inventory is pretty full (not 100% as this is inconvenient), go around Mos Eisley and sell the clothing and junk items back to a junk dealer for some extra credits, keeping the weapons and containers. Then go to the cantina. Go to the back room and sit down. Begin slicing EVERY sliceable item you have left. When all weapons have been sliced, sell them to the NPC in that room for more credits.
This method got me through the slicing branch fast, and i rather enjoyed it. Now, pistol XP, *shudder*

I have one thing to add before the question comes up and you get toasted by every flame-thrower here...
The quality of tools (knives, nodes, clamps, WUKs and AUKs), and resources that went into them, make absolutely NO difference to your slice outcome. Not under any circumstances nor any mascinations you might want to go through do they make a difference.
Oh, and BTW, there is NO pattern. It is random; pseudo-random by the code on the server and made utterly random by virtue of manyclients over unsychronized links asking for many pseudo-random numbers for the various activities they are performing.
