PLKs actually have a use, FANs are pointless once you have clamps.

PLKs are required to actually cut the wires while slicing, with a charge being lost each time you cut a wire. FANs predict which wire needs to be cut, with a 75% accuracey, although there's no point in using them as clamps (which are right 100% of the time) can be used by anyone (you'll just have to buy them instead of craft them until you reach Slicing IV).
