Thread: Tool resource Quality DOES affect slice performance, it doesn't say anywhere but it's true...

For the last damn time, no they do not. The devs have said this. OUr Corr has said this. I have talked face to face with the people who wrote the code and they have said this. Accpet it an move on.

No, I know it doesn't, but you should see your face...

Whoo, hoo...

Priceless!

But seriously, I had a customer say this to me the other day. The fellow had just done me a huge favour, so I couldn't realy flame him. Instead I'm going to vent my spleen here (don't feel obliged to read on, this is for my benefit only)...

How could thateven work?

Every item can be defined by a set of stats; a weapon is defined by it's attack speed, wound chance, max dmg, min dmg, max rng, min rng, ideal rng etc etc. Similar to the way that a electron can be defined by it's quantum numbers.Presumably these are stored on the server in digital form (and will include things like Object name, object image (for inventroy etc)).

In essence every item is ONLY A SET OF NUMBERS IN A COMPUTER. They do not have a life of their own, they are not real objects created from real resources. When the item is made, these numbers are generated and the resources used are "deleted" from the computer.

When an item is used, these stats are then employed in an equation to calculate the outcome of the action. E.g. Damage done to a target is a function of the max and min dmg of the weapon and the stat modifiers of the user atavar etc.

Ifan itemhas an effect on the performance of an action, then itlmusthave a set of stats defining this for thecalculation to performed,e.g.a crafting tool. These stats may be allocated to the tool at time of creation and may be atributable to the resource quality and experimental actions taken by the user. We see this in other items (e.g. weapons!).

IF THIS IS THE CASE FOR SCLICING TOOLS THERE MUST BE A SET OF STATS SOMEWHERE THAT DEFINE THESE ACTION MODIFIERS! WHY AREN'T THEY LISTED ON THE INFO WINDOW FOR THE TOOL? ARE THE DEVS REALY THAT CRUEL TO SMUGGLERS? IF SO I DEMAND THAT THEY MAKE THOSE STATS AVAILABLE NOW!

ISN'T IT MORE LIKELY THAT IT'S RANDOM? WOULDN'T THAT EXPLAIN WHY THIS SLICE WAS POOR, BUT THE LAST ONE WAS GOOD? ISN'T IT MORE LIKELY YOU ARE TALKING **edit**E?

WHY NOT STOP TALKING AND GIVE YOUR ARSE A REST?

Sorry, and thankyou for your patience. It's been a warm afternoon and I've had a few Guinness too many.

But they said that while we can make our characters young and old, they will only be as young or old adults, we can't make children in the game...

When the tools are crafted they have an experimental effectiveness. Just because the value is not in the item description doesn't mean it's not present. Of course, since a knife just cuts a wire and the clamp just tells you which wire to cut, if there is a difference at all, it's in the upgrade kits.

Perhaps it matters, perhaps it doesn't. I don't trust SOE to give us the truth, remember these are the same people that have been blowing us off on the smuggler revamp. In fact, if SOE tells us it doesn't matter I'm all the more inclined to believe the opposite. The only thing you can count on from liars is that they lie.

Regardless, I look at it this way: If you take pride in making your tools with the best materials available, and experimenting to the highest effectiveness... whether it makes a difference or not, you've eliminated one possible variable from a random result.

If any of you have ever done crafting missions, you might have spoken to the guy who says something like "I know it seems pointless to make a magnetic clamp look good, but I take pride in my work".

Lady Luck is fickle enough. Even the people who stridently declare that tool quality doesn't matter have certainly had moments of doubt after a string of bad slices.

I can honestly say that I have never once doubted that tool quality doesn't matter. Smuggler was my first profession too, so I've certainly done my share of slicing. But no matter what, good slices or bad, I've never doubted that tool quality had no effect. Why? Because I was as equally prone to streaks of good slices as to streaks of bad slices no matter what quality my tools were. If you record your slice values long enough, you can tell that there's no rhyme or reason to it all, just randomness.
