Thread: Why do you hate bank tips?

I've been reading some stories from here and there and I've noticed a trend. There are still some smugglers who refuse bank tips. And so, my question is "Why?". SOE has finally fixed the bank tip scam so the email you recieve comes from "Bank" and the message has all the info of how much and from who the tip came from.

So with this in mind why do some of you still refuse to accept payment via bank tip? (And please don't take my question the wrong way, I'm just honestly curious about this.)

you've got 6 people wanting slices. they all bank tip. you're charging 5k a slice. all the slices are high dmg. when it's all said and done, you've been Banktipped a total of 21,000 credits. 4 people have paid the full amount, two have just scamed you.

hope that helps.

It's even worse if they just /tip you. In this case I would tell them to NOT tip you until you are ready. At least with bank tips when you ask for payment and they say they already tipped you you can pop open email instead of having to scroll through chat text.

Do what I do, keep a chat tab that only logs system messages.

It's the trust issue. It's pretty much like a tug of war when it comes down to it. You're worried about giving someone their gear before paying while the other is worried about paying you before getting their gear.

Because people sometimes slice gear for free it falls on the smuggler to honest. If you don't /report conversations or have screenshots showing the convo you can be out of luck, but I believe they can track trades. It's easier than going through lines of text looking for a certain conversation.

That meansthe person asking for their gear to be sliced has the power because you can very well be banned for stealing moreso than they can for not paying. At least that's what it looks like to me. Correct me if I'm wrong someone.

I'd much rather they have the cash on hand and be able to pay the amount when the trade window comes up. They get their gear and I get my money and there's no way to confuse anything.

Don't think many would be comfortable with it. You have to hand over your gear and your money to the smuggler who could in turn take your items and run. They already have your cash.

Why do people tip b4 the slice? I always tell them to wait until I am done.

The people that openly give you money and a weapon are to trusting.

Hey, I like it when they trust me. It's a show of faith on their part that they understand you are not willing to put your reputation on the line for a single weapon and some credits. And I want my rep to remain clean.

Your reputation stays clean when you hand them the weapon and they give you the money in the same transaction.

Tipping someone money and giving them the weapon b4 the slice is wrong..

"here is my 10k weapon I just bought, here is 10k for the slice"

If they do get screwed, they lost one weapon, and the money to buy another.

If they hand over the weapon and the smuggler hauls ass... they just lost the weapon, they can use the money to go buy another.

I know this isn't the case for high costing weapons... but still... I think tips should come after slice.

If I get a 35% slice on the weapon, they are more prone to tip me extra after I tell them the slice compared to them giving me 10k b4 I slice.

I see your point, Digi, and you are right. Generally I go with what the customer is comfortable with. If they want to pay me beforehand, I let them. I don't ask for the money up front. Perhaps I should let them know it's okay to pay me after I actually do the work.

I've had people tip before the slice but I generally prefer it in the secure trade window (so I can see the money) or after I am finished. It only took once for me to go LD and get bugged during slicing. In addition, if anyone is going to be ripped off, it is better if it is the smuggler. Countless times I've seen smugglers get more business simply because of the way they handled an unpleasant customer. People appreciate honesty. I was even tipped when I was at Slice IV because I told a customer a Master Smuggler could do a better job than I could.

I will take their credits as a /tip, as a /tip bank, through the trade window, in a boat, over a moat, from a goat ... you get where this is going. I slice to get paid, if they pay me i'm happy. I don't care about the method so much as about the amount. I also don't charge a flat rate but base my fee on the % of the slice(s) so that it's hard for them to pay me up front. I don't want to be the store that takes Visa, not Mastercard, AmEx not Diners club, I'll take it all, just show me the money!!
