I was witness to an event last night that just left me sitting in my chair shaking my head.
I had decided that I was bored running around on the ground with no real goals left in either of my character builds. So, I logged on with Dreven and decided I'd finally try to work to improve on my 2/1/1/1 Imperial Pilot.
I headed to the Imperial Base on Talus to talk to my recruiter. That's when I was made aware first-hand of how truly broken the combat system in this game is...
WhenI arrived, the base was fully spawned. I'm not sure on numbers, but I'd be willing to say there were 50+ Stormtroopers roaming around, along with officers and such.
I noted the presence of a single blue dot amongst everything else. He was wearing an Alliance Ace Pilot tag, and he was meditating. Not that this struck me as odd, since I often meditate after minor battles to get rid of the few wounds I've taken.
But, as I entered the Pilot HQ building, I started to hear shooting. I turned around in the doorway and watched as this guy, who was a Fencer (I did an /examine and noticed he was using a stun baton), literally took out the entire garrison. He was armored and buffed...and, at most, I'd say he probably only took a few hundred points of damage through the entire fight. As I watched my combat log, I'd guess that he was only being hit maybe once every 20 shots or so...if that.
You may be asking why, as an Imperial, I didn't declare then and there and proceed to whooping his ass. Well...considering he was armored and buffed, and had stats upwards of 3000 on just about everything...and I was unbuffed, and my last set of armor is now a display piece in my house, even I'm not dumb enough to try that.
But the whole scene struck me as "not right". I went on and took my duty mission and jumped into space. But the events I witnessed just left a bad taste in my mouth...

i don't see why we need buffs any how. i can see slight enhansments from food or spice, but doc buffs are just way outa wack. a nother thing that i think is pretty stupid is haveing to get a doc buff just to put on my armour. i men come on i'm pretty sure commandos didn't stand in line for an hour at the nearest starport pay 14k for a 3 hour buff, just to get there gear on. i hope they fix alota stuff like this in the rebalance. i for one would like to see armour certs or atleats a penality for whering heavy armour if your a melee class.

What should have happened was:The Rebelwas scanned, failed, got tef'd then had to fight his way out of the HQ. He should have been able to kick some arse but being over run he would have needed to leave or be killed. Im a rebel and I hate watching Imps/Rebels solo tons of NPC like they were attacking a butt load ofmalnourishedmiddle school kids.

Too, too right. Combat is wildly out of whack, and let's hope the CU succeeds in bringing some semblance of reasonableness back to things.

pfffff you shoulda declared
powerboost, pixie, vercupti, some brandy, synthsteak or exo-protien and rushed in. once you intimidate fencers they're practically useless
Granted, you probly would have still died if he was a melee stacker :-/ but atleast you'd go down fighting! Heck, you might have been luck to catch him w/o stun armor and blasted him with a geo pistol
But ya.. that's forked up, and why we're doing what we're doing now

Not to add insult unto injury... I am a Fencer/pistoleer, and was grinding just yesterday and beating up on stormtroopers as well.
All i had to do was aggro a bunch then do area spin attack 2.
I get hit maybe 1/10 times.
I'm now gonna be a Fencer/M. Marksman/M. Rifleman/Pistoleer. It's a template based around using the rifle, but with stacked defenses.
Surely I can see you get sick reading this post. I would still be a smuggler today if I could somewhat fight well in PvP, and I lament dropping master pistoleer as well. You can judge me if you want (which I wouldn't suggest), but I refuse to pay money to play a class or classes that aren't effective at their role.
Don't get me wrong Dreven, I love smuggler and pistoleer a whole bunch, but as you say, "the combat system in this game [is truly broken]." I am a defense stacker in some peoples eyes, but in my own I am aquiring the tools for the job of protecting myself and my friends. You and I wish defense stacking wasn't the case. I do what is needed to survive.

Yeah...problem is, the only thing I had at my disposal was Powerboost...and even if I wanted it, the only other thing on your list that I own is a crate of brandy. But, since I knew I was headed into space and was probably gonna be there a while, I had emptied my inventory to make room for the ship parts I would loot.
Yeah...I know...I should probably be prepared for pretty much everything. But, with getting my merchant and vendors set up recently, along with getting 2 characters to Colonel, my bank balance is seriously hurting. I can't really afford the frills (like food and armor) that make for effective combat right now.

Nope, just the mental processes of one. I find it a href="http://www.ultimateveggie.com/sounds/ep07/pirates.wav" target=_blank>great song
though to relate the position of the smuggler profession. I think I'll go
share it with the devs. It makes an easier issues list if they can hear it in
audio.

hehe...gotta love VeggieTales...
anyway...I'm still frustrated about what happened last night...
What's really sad is, I'm kicking myself because I know that if I was in the same position, and I found myself buffed and armored in a base with that many targets, I would've done the same thing...just to see if I could survive.
I can't really fault the player, since it's not technically an exploit. I do fault the system for encouraging it.
I figure the guy probably picked up 500 FP (I don't know what STs count for as far as FP), probably about 10k creds, and whatever loot he picked up...and we all know the Imp NPCs are the ones dropping the good stuff at the moment. All for about 5 minutes of work...not counting travel times from whereever he came from.
I can't wait for the CU to come along and put a stop to all of this stuff...

I'll be back for sure Ipseck! I'll be back after the Combat Upgrabalavamp. I PvP'ed as a triple master, but oddly enough... hardly used the pistol skills. I was of much more value to my group sticking states and bringing foes to the ground. Considering how much I absolutely detest playing a melee class, that is why I dropped triple master.
I went to a BH Pistols/M. Pistoleer/Fencer defenses template to try and make use of pistols in PvP, my dream btw.
Pistols don't cut it. Now I'm selling my soul to become just another FotM rifleman with fencer and pistoleer defenses. Mind you, please, I do not become one with the cold, heartless approach of a flavor-of-the-monther. I just want to do my guild some real good in a fight... with a ranged weapon. I have much love for my guild, so the decision was obvious. I have much love for myself too! I didn't go melee! I gots to have me some guns!
Odd thing is that in real life I study a martial art called Aikido....
