I have been a master smuggler since March of 2004. I loved being a smuggler, but with the new inventory system I'm frustrated currently the only real value of the smuggler profession is making decent money off slicing, That all changed with the inventory system change. No matter how you try and go around the problems created by the change it is too much trouble to really be worth it trying to makes some money off slicing. The crafting part of the profession is pretty much useless and the combat side of is not enough reason to keep the profession be better off going with a better combat profession. Anyone have any encouragement before i just totally drop the one profession i designed this char for that i started in Dec. of 2003.

The thing is for the expenses that you pay to buy or make the the clamps and precision knives is it really worth it for the small increase you get as far as payment for the missions. Its just frustrating having a profession that uses up so many skill points and give back almost nothing in return.

I want to be a master smuggler not because it will increase my l33t uberness but because I want to play the game and have fun. Being a star wars fan I thought han solo was the coolest. So when I am playing the Star WarsMMO I want to play a smuggler.
Its a cool and fun profession not because we are the best fighters, can make the most money, or can even smuggle but rather cause of the cummunity and the fact that we have unique skills.

Jack,
I feel your pain. I have become frustrated as well with the profession but I plan to stick it out. Tonight gave me a good laugh and a smile to reassure me that I picked the right profession.
I was driving around Talus (Which I think I have been to about all of 3 times since I started playing SWG) bored out of my mind. I come across the Erran Finn (think thats how you say it) lair. Ok, jump off the bike and start exploring...not muchto see until I get to the bottom and there Erran is with his two cronies. Well I manage to take Erran out but his friends have drained me pretty well, I am switching between the two using Health shot 2 and i low blow them both to put a little distance between me and them. I make it up to the next room before they are on me again and I know I won't make it out so I use our ever popular FD and drop. It actually scared me for a moment because I didn't know if they incapped me first or if I FD'd in time but I see that I did and they jsut stand there...bleeding. I pray that they move back down to their rooms that they started, which they eventually did, still bleeding. After a few minutes I get back up...sit and recover my HAM..all the while watching them bleed their health away, then run back down and finish them off.
The real scary and extremely rewarding part was that the moment the second guy hit the floor, my buffs ran out...perfect timing. I walk out with some nice loot and a smile on my face because my beloved professions skills saved the day for me.
Yes there will be frustrating days, yes you will sit in anger at mag seal containers in lairs that have mag seal containers that have the option to slice not work for us. Yes we aren't the uber elite fighter. But, we aren't supposed to be. It was days like today that made it fun. Its watching people cheer and dance around like a dang nut because you sliced their prized possession witha perfect slice (and the 20k tip on top of the 10k charge made it even sweeter). Its slicing the terms for my guildmates so I can grab higher paying missions for us. Its FD, the most loved and hated skill in this game i think, and a skill I have underutilised far too often. Its this forum, a group of friends, commrades, and brothers and sisters that support each other like no other in this game and will go to any lengths to help anyone that needs it.
We are needed by the enitre community for our abilities to make that greatweapon created/lootedatrue masterpiece.
Hell,we havethe coolest icon out there matey! Haarrrrrrr
Its all of this and more. You designed your character for this profession and I think if you were to give it up and move to another one you will never like how he turns out.
Yes we are broke, yes we are hurting right now. But I believe there is abold new future for us and there is light at the end of that long tunnel. True, it could be the light of a oncoming nerf train, but if it is I going down with clamps in one hand and my DL-44 in the other fighting all the way.
Stay the course brother, we are here with you all the way.

We're still the dirtiest dudes in town. How many professions can say that? Just us, that's who.

Yeah, I think everyone on this forum has crafted this letter at least once - some actually posted too!
If I put it all on paper, by rights the profession isn't worth it when compared to another combat class (in my case - Rifleman). So much doesn't work, and what does work, well, doesn't always seem to be the best.
With that said though, I've gotten more fun out of the Smuggler proffession than any other. There have been times when I've gotten +30% Damage range increases on exceptional weapons that just left people gasping with joy who still call me up a year after I did them going "Man, that was some slice - I babied that weapon for months!" or there have been times when someone wants to duel, I tell them to get lost - they do, I accept, Low Blow, Last Ditch, HealthShot, EndDuel and just laugh myself silly.
For now, I'm sitting tight until the CU and then maybe will look at options past that. Ultimately though if you're not having fun you do have to do something. Maybe you should try another proffession - we'll always have locked containers and clamps for ya when you come back
Cheers

I've been a smuggler since live and I can offer you absolutely NO encouragement. I consider myself mentally unstable for continuing this charade as long as I have.
Fortunately I seem to be nearing the end of my masochistic stint as a Smuggler that smuggles squat. As with UO, AO, Horizons and FFXI I'm logging into SWG less and less every week. One day I'll realize that I really don't play any more and just cancel my freaking account and move on to another MMORPG...or nothing else if I have have a brain cell still working.

Well, for what its worth...
2 weeks ago I dropped master smuggler, the entire spices line, 3 boxes of slicing, and 3 boxes of underworld, and dumped those skill points into mastering a combat profession.
Since doing that, I've had more fun in the game, and have been challenged again. Its like I've actually become somewhat effective in doing the things I enjoy doing - and the truth is, I've not lost anything from smuggler I wasn't using anyway. I didn't sell faction points or spices, and I didn't slice for the public.
For me, this was the best decision to make - I got tired of being so broken and inefficient for the skill points I used, and everytime I would post to complain about it, it seems that the developers just did something else to hamper the profession.
(Brief aside - I saw in a patch note somewhere from Tiggs that the color palette for slicing composite armor is finally been deemed "not game breaking but it sure is annoying". So at least one annoying thing is being looked into.)
You need to do what is best for you. I can't offer any encouragement for this profession because nothing is being done to improve it that we know of. To continue to be in the profession that gets broken and never fixed will surely drive you out of the game; it becomes a matter of how much more you can take, and eventually, you pass the point of no return. That's what I was staring in the face when I made the decision to drop skill points. I was takingthe nerfs, being ignored, and continual damage with no explanationtoo personally and that's not healthy at all.
Once you realize that you have no power to effect the outcome for the profession, its rather freeing. You alone can control your enjoyment, be it staying a smuggler, moving to another profession, or quitting the game to move on to greener pastures. My best advice is to evaluate what you enjoy most from the game, and tailor your toon to maximize that enjoyment. But - also be prepared that the answer may end up being "I enjoy nothing anymore from this game.", and be prepared to act on that as well.
Bottom line - if you are miserable with what you are doing, its probably in your best interest to not do it any longer. Why pay SOE to be miserable? There's enough out there in life that can make you miserable for free...

Amen, brother. I'd just composed a massive post, a desperately sad lament for what could have been and a bleak future. But then I went back, read your comment and was revitalised. You're right, sod it. If they want to take me down, they have to do a damn sight more than mess with my Inventory.

I'm in all the way to the end. I am a rogue, scoundrel, gambler... and one day maybe i'll get to be a $muggler. If not, i'll still be here being the same scruffy looking nerf herder i am today. I've tried other professions with other characters... its all come back to smuggler. The Skifter may not be the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, but she is deffinately the ugliest. I may not be the best in combat, butI hold my own in an unfair fight. When the chips are down, and theres no idiot's array to be found, you bluff; and while youu may lose some, but you know you just ante up for more.
Keep your eye on that sabacc pot brother, its just with-in reach.
