Can't say that I've ever read of anybody doing SL/Smuggler. You do have enough skill points to master both, but not much else.

You can master both with 9 sp surplus. You can either get novice pistoleer or not master SL or Smig and pick up medic.

A combo i would like to hear about is Ranger/SL it does seem like youd have no real combat skills but I think that it may be a nice tool to have as a group, especially in PvE

I have tried this, I was master smuggler while I decided to Squad leader again (I always do) so i slowly dropped of other skills to move onto SL. After that I slowly started to get Carbines instead of my old pistoleer skills i had left behindand started dropping smuggler.
I cant really say there is anythign that smuggler has that enhances SL, more than the PvP parts. As a smuggler i can easier replace my lost faction pets just by using money and I lose less Fp when dying in PvP and my opponent get less for killing me. I guess making you own spice can be nice, but it is so cheap anyway so it is no great advantage. Slicing weapons is nice, but so random yu can let a friend or smuggler do it for you anyway, there is no personal skill.
If you are amaster pistoleer/master squad leader you cannot afford the dirty fighting part, that is too bad.
But, if you are a PvPing SL then the underworld tree could come in handy in part.
Best advantage would when taking a base, you could do 2 of the jobs for the group. But, dont have to be master in both for it...

I'm trying this now. Haven't mastered yet so am using some SP in pistoleer as I move up the tree's. It is definietly a support role for groups. As an SL/Ranger u have skills to offer for both PvP and PvE. This combo also gives you a way to make money (hunting requested resources). It's been fun so far and that's what's important.
