Thread: Combating Dabblers in the Professions

After reading the Jedi/BH threads,a thought occurred to me so I thought I'd throw it out there for debate.

What if the professions were made to punish the dabblers - here's what I'm thinking, and using Smuggler as the example (but it could be applied to any profession).

This is partly inspired by the Tier system used in JTL. If memory serves (not at the game at the moment) but I believe Dirty Fighting 1 has a Skill Modifer of +45 and Spices 1 has a assembly & expermentation modifier of +20 each.

What if the skills modifers for 1 Tier of skills was spread out throughout the Tier and not just in one category? So instead of what we have now:

Underworld:

Slicing:

Dirty Fighting: +45

Spices: +20

We'd have:

Underworld: Feign Death +11

Spice Exp + 5

Spice Assm +5

Slicing: Feign Death +11

Spice Exp +5

Spice Assm +5

and so on.

Some immediate Pros and Cons I can think of would be:

Pros:

* If you're working for the Master - this won't harm you

* Would discourage Dabblers

Cons:

Less Flexibility to experment in other classes (i.e. Chef going for Master Chef and Spices IV)

I'm sure more will come to me later - but like I said, just curious if anyone had thoughts on this

Cheers

The thing is, the game was developped purposfully avoiding pushing peoples into "classes" cookie cutter kind of template. Dabbling IS encouraged, not per see a "problem".

Because of the BHs and the Jedi We complain a lot about dabbling in Smuggler skills. But most of us dabble too, in other skills!

So I don't see it as much as "punishing them" as to ballancing the professions so dabblers are less powerful in that proffession than Master of it.

Semantic asside, I like your proposal. Remind me a bit of the CH tree, where every skill box give you bonus to the max creature level mod.

I think dabbling is a good thing, gives people more options and I dont think anyone should be "punished" for it. As far as FD goes, to me its to low in the skill tree makingit to easy to get and thats not cool. % of it working being very poor at the novice lvl is one very good way to fix the problem or just a move up the tree is another way to lower dabblers from getting the skill. Its like putting FoW or dead eye shot 4 in the novice TKA or BH skill trees. A strong profession skill should be tuff to get and cost skill points, but everyone should be able to dabble. For me its a skill balance (placement wise)issue not a dabbler issue.

Yeah, that's the problem with the idea, is that it does go against the idea of dabbling and getting your feet wet with other professions. Maybe just as a Tier 1 thing - so if the Jedi/BH is going wants a good FD, they're going to have to invest another 15 skills points.

Ah well..

I see where your going with this, and I do agree with your logic, but not with your method. Things like FD should be smuggler exclusive. It should be bumped to Master, seeing that it is such a good skill, that everyone uses it, it shows that it ranks as high as unarmedhit 3 to the TKM, which is a Master skill.
