I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but it came to me in an epiphone while I was sitting in Chili's last night eating dinner with a friend...
PLAYER SMUGGLING
The current "Spice" tree would be changed from a crafting tree to a qualifications tree. Instead of being able to MAKE Shadowpaw, Yarrok, and Grey Gabaki at Novice Smuggler, those would be our first "certifications" for transporting spice with a 90% success rate (e.g. You'd be less likely to be caught going through checkpoints, or whatever they do with contraband in the future)
At each new skill level in the Spice tree, Smugglers would gain "certification" for 3 new spices. Instead of Crafting spices for the community, Smugglers would simply "aquire" it. The main spices, up to Spices 4 would be available from the "Spice Mine" on Rori via NPC "dealers". At the Master Smuggler level, the player would gain "certification" to transport Glitterstim from Kessel. Only Master Smugglers would be allowed to land on Kessel (although if a non-Smuggler were on a Smuggler's MP ship, you could visit with them when they land.) Kessel would be a new adventure planet, although I won't go into detail about Kessel here, I will say that it should have at least Spice Mines, and an Imperial Prison.
In this manner, Smugglers would no longer Craft spices, they would simply "pick them up" for players who are interested in using them. Likewise if the smuggler so chooses, he could buy some for himself, and try selling them on the street, or the bazaar...
There it is... don't know why I didn't think of it sooner...

yeah, sorry...it's a good idea but it has been suggested before.
After 15+ months of brainstorming our revamp there is little we haven't come up with, even if only briefly.

Ok, despite the near snide replys... it's still the BEST idea out there, whether I came up with it or not!

Well it's AN idea...whether it's more fun to make it or more fun to run to a bunch of NPC's and collect it a little at a time is something that we'd have to see.
But the problem still remains of...
Illegality. You have to make getting chased and busted mean something which under the current way searches and punishments work it just ain't gonna be worth anything unless I"m buying it in a cantina (which is the only place I've ever been scanned).
So who are we smuggling it past? Who's scanning us?
See? The problem isn't WHAT we're doing, it's WHO we're supposed to be avoiding.

Heh heh, yeh, it's been suggested a, ahem, few times before
.
Don't let that deter you though! chances are the next thing that pops into your head has never been thought of

Maybe if a police elite profession was added (CorSec?), to be sort of like the BH's to your Jedi? It would be pretty awesome, and give people who don't care for BH/Jedi a different end game to strive for.

Preferably, planetary police forces would be the ones to search you, while both Rebel and Imperial units will search you from time to time, potentially forcing players into Overt status(if they're factional).
"But Jaecob, why have the Rebels scan people?"
Do you think the Rebel Alliance want its forces all sniffing spice? If everyone's high, who's gonna save the galaxy?
"Red Five, get ready for your attack run."
"....""Red Five, get ready for your attack run."
*exhale*"Heeheehee"
"Damnet, would someone get that bong away from him?"
Plus, the scanning units shouldn't be the joke they are nowadays. They should be a group of NPCs to be feared. Kinda like, the Emperor's Personal Guard. Only they can't die. And they got like, frickin' lasers attatched to thier frickin' heads.
Anyway, the local police forces would deffinately be the best choices.
Then, increase the penalties for carrying contraband about massively. Instead of getting fined a couple grand, how about getting fine a couple hundred grand? Include the inability to sell contraband on regular vendors or the Bazaar.
This has all been mentioned before.
