I just wanted to post this to see if other smugglers are thinking the same thing. I think its all great that we get some spice for our trouble and that it is a good start. But I also wanted to mention that there were other items smuggled besides spice.
Criminal factions made a killing selling Imperial-contolled spice lower than the regulated value without alerting the authorities. As such, the production of spice and other narcotics are principally handed out by the Hutts and Black Sun among other criminal organizations.
The Rebels also had a need for smugglers as well. Dash Rendar in the opening of Shadows of the Empire is delivering a shipment of supplies to Echo Base. These items are not spice, but perhaps cold weather clothing, food supplies, weapon supplies, medical supplies and if the Rebellion needed it he was delivering it. So in fact, the Rebellion is in great need of these supplies and smugglers.
The Empire, while frowning on smugglers, actually could have a use for them. The more shadier, black ops operations and corrupt Moffs and other officials could have need of smugglers as well so that the Empire does not catch on to their illegal operations. You could easily use General Otto of Lok, a refugee from one of the few horribleStar Wars games,Star Wars Demolition. He could easily develop a need for spice perhaps. Perhaps Imperial Smugglers could aid Admiral Zaarin's renegade Imperial fleet by smuggling supplies and weaponry to him. Another interesting thought would be that covert Imperial black ops like Mara Jade or other groups would have need of experimental Imperial weaponry that is somewhat liberated from ignorant Imperial bueraucrats. Maybe a damaged Star Destroyer is in need of certain parts that the Empire needs to send, but does not want to alert the Rebellion that a damaged Star Destroyer is nearby.
I propose that more than spice can be smuggled and that the smuggler may find uses for these items as well. Perhaps in weapon shipments, smugglers could rarely obtain rather nice powerups for weapons or medical supplies that function like those temporary skill boosters. Maybe some new components to armor or weapons or even items to make new clothing. In this way, smugglers could be more involved in the GCW. What if successful contracts gave a minor maintenance boost to GCW bases or led to Bounty Hunters hired to kill successful Rebel and Imperial smugglers? Interesting thoughts...

In the doc it mentioned explosives. I imagine you'll be smuggling just about any contraband under the sun; weapons, spice, explosives, fake IDs, anything. You might not receive something like fake IDs so they might pay you extra or perhaps Spice is considered a currency in the Underworld and you receive Spice no matter what you deliver.
The doc is a concept, nothing more. Can't say anything at all about the changes until they're programmed.
Best to give it a try before saying how it can be improved.

Yeah, I read it as the item smuggled would change but that ONE of the items would be spice which we would get through that method as opposed to crafting.
I hope I'm right.

Yeah, part of the reasoning behind mentioning the other smuggled items is to help create scenarios where we can have smuggling contracts with the Empire and Rebel Alliance as well besides Jabba and Valarian. It would be cool if we could smuggle for Nym, which was one of my original goals.

Yeah as long as we're not only spice haulers and gun runners I'll be good. Smuggling bacta/med supplies, food, raw material, basically everything under the sun. The more options we have, the more immersive the game will be, after all some smugglers hate spice and refuse to carry it.

Probably to equal the number of WS you'll have trying to be the highest bidder for your shipments...

Would be nice to know if some really nice Rare smuggling missions will ever come up so you could really pick when you "lost" your goods. =)

Great minds....
As I was reading the document, I'm seeing an imperial contact and a jabba contact and thinking to myself: ummm, rebels need smugglers just as much, if not more, than the imperials. Medical supplies and guns to the various rebel bases, outlaws off planet. They might even need some supplies they raided from the imperials but don't need taken to a fence, but if it were intercepted, the imperials would know it was stolen, etc.
I'd expect a rebel smuggler to have more risks, perhaps less rewards. After all, spice smugglers are usually arrested (well, they would be arrested if they gave up, which we all know isn't likely to happen
), while someone smuggling a rebel out of town would be shot on sight, even if the outlaw were being taken alive. As for rewards, the rebel alliance isn't super well funded, and can't just hand out tons of cash to every side. Perhaps the rewards would be discounts at a rebel supplier, a whole lot of faction, or other things.
I agree, the document is flexible, and I'm sure they'll put other smuggling factions in. I just hope beyond hope that the rebel smuggling needs aren't overlooked.
