Hey all, I'm new at this and I will admit to not reading all the backlog on Smuggler suggestions... so if this idea's come up, bear with.
Smuggling is all about moving contraband from point A to point B. The idea is thus: Only smugglers can successfully trade Imperial contraband. A person traveling through a star port should get roughly the same treatement that we all get at airports these days. The x-ray, the metal detector and the rubber glove. If someone is caught moving contraband, they get the usualtreatment. However, Smugglers should have a very good "saving throw," to use a D&D-ism,to avoidgetting caught with the contraband in question.
Now when a Smuggler trades a contraband item to an PC character, it gets set witha flag that basically renders it with the same avoidance bonus as when the smuggler had it. That flag stays with the item as long as the character possess the item in one fashion or another. The minute that an item gets acquired by a player who was not the original recipient, be it through a player trade, picking it up from a house or vendor, what have you, that flag goes away and it is now subjected to the same cavity searching that the Imperials are going to put it through.
As an added bonus, you shouldn't be able to buy stuff off the Galactic Bazaar that's contraband. It's monitored by the Imperials. It's not the black market, it's the Galactic Bazaar. The smugglers should be the black market for this kind of stuff.
There're obvious problems with this system, of course. One is trusting that the Smuggler in question actually completes the business transaction between whomever and whoever (great grammar, eh?). But then, most people put that same amount of trust into a smuggler when having them slice their equipment and their locked containers. Smugglers, like in the real Star Wars, will have their reps to live up to, and well-connected business type playersare going to recommend smuggler players for doing those shady transactions and being honest about it.
The only other problem I forsee is getting stopped every time you cross the threshold from the ticket area into the actual landing area. But then, you've got 0-10 minutes to wait for a freakin' shuttle. Odds are you can afford to get stopped and searched, still making your flight.
This is just an idea and refinement is probably in order. Let's refine this idea, because if such a system can be instituted, smugglers will suddenly become a very key component to Star Wars Galaxies.
