Here's what I'm doing:

I paid up my houses for a year or so. Even if the house runs out, it'll start pulling from your bank account, so mine'll last a while.

Now they say that your characters will still be there up to three months after you cancel, but no characters have ever been removed as far as I know. This could change in the future. If you want to be safe, pay for one month every three and you should be alright.

Personally, I'm not sure I'm coming back, so I don't really care. I certainly won't be going back to the server I'm on right now anyway.

There was an old-character wipe about 8 months ago.
At least they said they were going to do it.
I don't know whether it was really done or not.

I've been gone a while, but based on the number of houses I see around Coronet, it doesn't look like they've done another one.

I thought it was six months that your characters were safe, but I could be wrong.
When I left, I put 6 months of maint. in my houses, but since i came back early, it didn't really matter.
Vendors are a different story. I left mine with some items on them that weren't reallly worth much knowing that if they didn't sell, they would be gone, so I only put enough maint. in the vendors to last 60 days (just in case I did come back that soon).
They will disappear if there is nothing listed on them for 100 days I believe. I think vendors will draw from your bank like houses, but I'm not sure.
No real point to pay maint. if they are empty though.

If you want to be truly safe, you should sub every 3-4 months, but you should be fine.

Although with the number of people that left after the CU, they could do a wipe at any time, to try and clear up some db space and open up some lots for those that are left.

It's amazing the houses vs vendor ratio that used to exist around Coronet 4 months ago compared to now.

I've quit twice, once for about 6 months, and once for another 3 or so. Only thing I lost was a storage factory I had placed on Dath for the PA I was in, and I had told them if they wanted to keep using it that they would have to start putting some maintenance it in. They didn't, and it poofed.

I put all MY stuff in my one house, droids, and bank. Payed the maintenance on the house enough to last a year, and I still have a good 100+ days left on it from the last time I quit. Everything was still there when I got back, both times. I even got to collect vet rewards when I came back last time, and that was a nice treat to start out with.

After you hit "Cancel" the next screen tells you that you're guaranteed your characters for 3 months, but they also state that they use the player wipe very rarely so having an expectation of a year is reasonable. There's also this nice little exit survey you get to answer after you've cancelled. What better way to let them know how they screwed up.

I just paid everything up for a year and cancelled.
