Ok when I first started playing the game I didn't know what a slice was, as I'm sure many players who are just starting the game don't know either. After I found out it was fine and I later learned about armour slicing etc and one day took the plunge and became a TKM/PistoleerMaster Smuggler (/hug lastditch).
Now a lot of players would ask questions about randomness with a view to powerup slicing, so I'm not talking about them, and understandably players just starting the grind for the first time will ask a few questions etc.
What makes me laugh is a player pulling up in an AV21, pulling out a bunch of T21's and asking for a speed slice on most of them and a few damage slices for once they get master. I've seen people come to me for slices with a couple of friends from their guild asking me if they can get speed slices too, all three of them not knowing that slices were random.
Maybe they were just trying to appease the slicing gods by acting dumb, but players who have had their accounts for some time surprise me a lot when I'm asked questions like that. They may have formerly been crafters or medics and never needed a slice before so I'd like to see a little bit more slicing info in the Holocron, if not we'll be hearing more stories of people shouting "thief" when theyget adamage slice instead of a speed one.

For every foolery there is allways a Idiot who tries it. Theywill never die. You will find yourself waking up in the middle of the night by your own screaming of "IT IS RANDOM FOR GODS SAKE!".
Best way to avoid this is to add a little note to your Bio about ramdomness in slicing. It worked fine for me.

On the opposite side of the scale, I got really upset at a lousy slice I did for a guy. Did a 17% speed slice on a DE-10 pistol. I cried, I apologized, I cried again. The guy said, "Hey np, I know it's not your fault." and tipped me 20k.
I'm not as much bothered by random types of slices (speed/damage or encumbrance vs efficiency) but what does bother me is a 17% slice when I'm a Master Smuggler. For people not overly sure of how slicing works, that just tells them I'm a lousy smuggler and they never come back for more slicing.
I shouldn't have to explain everytime I slice that the percentages and types of slice are completely random. I shouldn't have to say 1/2 the time "I'm sorry, it's really not my fault." I'm a Master Smuggler, I have little much else that makes me my profession, and I'm at the top of my profession, at least make "my screw ups" (readrandomness)be decent when I'm a Master.
