Thread: is it by accident?

mods and abilities are placed anywhere and everywhere in no discerning order. i can understand why they would want to spread out the various mods and abilities of the classes but seriously they seem hopelessly random now. for ex, going up the spice tree gives you pistol skills now, which makes greatsense.

It's to prevent dabblers.

I hate to sound like a non-loyal smuggler, since our profession has been plagued by dabblers, since most of our profession is useless to pure combat, but this random thing is not the way to remove dabblers. What they should do is simply make the master elite boxes worthy of the title master. By placing large bonuses and awesome moves (or, as they are doing, interesting certs), more people will be moved to become a master of a profession. As it is, however, alot of people like swg for the simple fact that they can be dabblers. They can be true jacks of all trades, unlike other games which have the jack of all trades class that really can't do much of anything, and usually simply has their own specific role that has nothing to do with anything else, such as the redmage. Sure they can heal, sure they can fight, but they really debuff, that's what they're for. With a pistoleer/smuggler dirty fighting/bh pistols or something like that (even if it isn't possible, hold with me), one could focus totally on using the pistol. By dabbling in medic, one can heal people a bit. By having some scout survival, I can set up a camp for my group. I don't want to be a ranger setting up a small village, but I'm there for backup if noone else can make a camp.

The ability to dabble and make a completely unique character if I so choose is one of the defining characteristics of swg. I understand dabblers also create cookie cutters. But I'd rather have a few cookie cutters than being called a gimp because I didn't go master pistoleer, just took one line to get a move I think that my character would use. I don't mind being called or in fact being a gimp, mind you, but some people do. Also, now I think we'll have more master blank/master blank than before. Instead of a few cookie cutters and a few simply unique characters, we'll have one or two cookie cutters per class, period. I have a bad feeling about this....

Dabbling. The great conundrum.

I think it very much needs to be a balancing act - encourage dabbling enough to end up with a diverse player population - and the non-weapon specific specials is a great move in this regard - but also reward mastery of a profession with tangible benefits.

It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.

But the one real concern i have relates to the smuggling revamp. It is very important to me that Smuggler combat dabblers do not get access to all of the involved smuggling missions and spice. That would go beyond dabbling into butchery.

It is already so with Bounty Hunters, and, in fact, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it, as long as other skill trees have unique benefits too, and the Master box is worth it for its own set of benefits. (currently not true with the BH skill set)

However, this is not an approach they are taking - they are simply making each profession pretty useless without being a Master, and throwing the whole 'SWG is interesting because of unique profession system' premise down the drain.

Dabbling was good - the problem was with not enough incentive to master, and not very well thought out skill trees, so that only a single one in some professions was 'worth it'.

My thoughts: spreading the skills out in smuggler will allow a player to dabble for ONE SKILL/SPECIAL. I assure you that a player will no longer be able to take only one line of a profession and take the meat out of the profession that they need and discard the rest.

For example, in the past, all of our fighting moves were in Dirty Fighting. A player could take that line and forget the whole rest of the profession trees. Now, if a player only wants smuggler for Last Ditch.... that is probably the only thing they will invest their points in from smuggler. Hopefully, it will snare the player into picking up MORE smuggler if they like the nature of our specials or the other "undesirable" skills they picked up trying to get Last Ditch.

Note: The CU isn't testable with elite professions, which where thrown together because no one will be testing for now.

I don't see how that is attractive to them. They are attacking a jedi and the jedi is whipping their ass... so they do a last ditch to do tons of damage, the jedi dodges, blocks it, the bh is out of all 3 ham pools, jedi heals, kills bh. End of story.

I also believe last ditch should be moved from the underworld tree. If people think the skill is desirable and acquire it, and then they decide to sell faction... im screwed out of my business.

Jedi won't be blocking much anymore outside of the FRS

for the record, i wasnt just talking about smuggler skills being all over the place. its like that with each profession and i agree with the others that think this is a bad move. it might be the move that makes me lose my interest in this game. i mean if they really just want us to essentially play one profession then just make the game level based!

Actually BH's are talking about Last Ditch like it's the new FD...

Which is the only problem I've ever had with dabblers, the forums general outcry over the proverbial spilled milk. A dabbler finds a special that works well for him...

in this case BH's are theorizing that a Bomb Droid, used in conjunction w/ Last Ditch could provide a fairly effective method to kill Jedi...

If so the Jedi will surely scream bloody murder about essentially being 2-shotted
