Thread: Feign Death in Space Idea 2

In the skill description for Feign Death, it mentions acting like your ship was scrap.

Will this work and how, if people are allowed to aim and shoot in real-time as opposed to incapacitation removing someone as a target?

This could be kind of cool. When you feign in space your ship would eject some debris that you keep around for just such a situation and then completely power down. You'd be stuck just drifting unpowered but it would allow you to affect repairs before going through the start-up procedure and being attackable again.

That is a good idea for how it could work, but are you suggesting that when we are powered down, we become invulnerable, and invisible, making people think the debris is us? Anything short of invulnerability and invisibilty won't really help in any way I can see, because we'll still be visible, targetable, and attackable.

Also - should acting like this (turning off power) be a Smuggler only tactic? Maybe Smugglers should be able to modify their own ships to allow them, (with the FD skill) to fake a direct hit and spray the afore-mentioned debris out, confusing the opponent's ships' radars, and reducing visibility.

its going to be twitch so there isn't going to be auto aim and fire. Why waste the bullets on a broken ship when your being fired on by a bigger one.

But what is "a broken ship"? Some people aren't going to be happy with leaving you with no power, some are going to want to blow your ship to tiny pieces, especially in PvP.

If you shoot a ship the engines stop and debris flys out it seems as good as dead. I don't see how they are going to do this if they do. Its going to make it real hard if they can see your health.

I posted a similar idea in another thread, but more PvE related, since I agree with others that it would be quite difficult to make this work in PvP.

For PvE, however, it would work really well. Say you're smuggling a shipment of illegal goods, and suddendly you pick up a small squad of Imperial TIE Fighters on your radar. Space will, of course, have the same Crackdown Scans as we see on the ground, so you've got a couple of options: 1. Blast them out of the sky, just hope they don't call for backup; 2. Run like hell, just don't pull a Han and drop your shipment 3. Pray they don't scan you, or if they do pray you don't get caught, though this isn't the best plan ever; 4. Feign Death.

Feign Death would let you fully power down your ship to look like floating space debris. If the FD succeeds then the TIEs take no notice of you on their patrol. If the FD fails, then it's debatable what should occur. I don't think they should immediately open fire, as there's no reason for them to (yet hehe). I think the best thing to do is have them do a Crackdown Scan on your ship for Contraband, but the chances of getting caught should be higher than normal. Why? Well, because you were acting suspiciously, so they'd probably perform a more thorough search than normal.

I also think that the success of your FD should not be entirely random or based on skill points. You, and any passengers on your ship, should have to remain both quiet and somewhat motionless. If people are running all around your YT-1300 chatting it up like they're at a cocktail party, then the chances of you getting caught rise. But, if everybody shuts up and sits still, then the TIEs are more likely to believe you really are just floating debris.

Then they'll have the same problem they have on the ground....IOW they are SOL.

Ok...here's what I gleaned from all the interviews.

It is not just a case of aim your recticle and pull the trigger. One of the developer specifically mentions that you have to click on your target ship first.

What this means is that the smuggler could use a skill much like feign death which powers down the ships main systems and lets the ship go into a spin. At this point the ship would lose functionality but would become unattackable. This should not be a get out of jail free card for the smuggler though. Feign should not work 100% of the time, and with the shields down would leave them open to heavy hull damage.

Larger ships should have the ability to scan the wreck for any signs of life. In fact 'scanning unit' should be an upgrade for most ships. If the scan is sucessful the hostile ship senses life aboard your vessel and can re-engage. A smugglers skill should determine how well they mask their life signs.

However this is exploitable to some extent. Given the nature of inertia in space players could point their ship at their destination, thrust forward and then feign, allowing the ship to float in the same direction as it was going, not using any power, and unattackable.

So for that reason I suggest that a smugglers feign would be along the lines of cutting all power to the ship, including life support. This would then give them no more then 120 seconds of life support before they had to come out of feign.

Needs work but it could be very cool. Certainly a smuggler only trick.

So then! Get a squad of smugglers to fly in full speed, use feign ship death, use inertia to float past enemy defenses then come alive again to kill the maintarget! Me thinks it needs some work... this shouldn't turn you into god mode.

I said it was exploitable and offered two very good solutions.

a) limit it to 120 seconds.

b) make a new ship part called 'scanning unit" which gives a chance of detecting life abord the ship.

After that it's not god mode. It's a trick a smuggler can use to avoid confrontation ( our job if you recall ) with a penalty for failure. 1 or 2 free shots whilst your shields are down.
