Honestly? Wouldn't it be ideal to base slicing on slicing XP, and underworld on contraband transfers? It doesn't make any sense! Do I seriously have to grind over 3mil worth of pistol xp?

Many moons ago, there was a time when this was almost the case. Slicing was raised by these strange Slicing xps that show up from time to time and there was a thing called Spices that used spice crafting xp. It was a strange time, full of questions regarding the quality of resources used in crafting slicing tools, and many embarked on grand pilgrimages to the Floating Shrub to find the answers to such questions.

But then the Combat Upgarde came, and it was decided that Smugglers were now a combat profession, rather than the hybrid we were for so long. So it was decided that we should raise all of our skills by shooting things. And it remained a stange time, but for different reasons.

And, as for xp from contraband transfers, well that'd be even stranger than pistols.

Expediency on the part of the devs. Their creativity couldn't keep up with the need for expedient changes so they just dumbed the whole thing down a bit more. A trend I do believe.

Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie, Two years of "Soon"(TM), a harsh bunch of lies.
Ask me a riddle and I reply: "Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie"

Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie, Dancers can't smuggle and neither can I.
Ask me a riddle and I reply: "Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie."

Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie, Why are there Jedi, I don't know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply: "Smuggler, Smuggler, Smuggler Pie."

While dumbed down, it's at least fast. It can be done in a looong night if you have another mastery in a combat profession so you get decent xp from start.

I prefer to think of it as a temporary fix, a step towards a brighter future if you will. While they clear up all the other problems in the game, they base every smuggler skill around pistol xp. And then, they'll eventually get around to fixing smuggler, and making it the awesome hybrid profession that it rightfully should be.

I hope.

Reading this, SOE? =DDD

What I don't understand is since Smuggler is so pistol xp centric, why must we waste SP's in the unarmed line still?

Because we are smugglers, we are meant to be able to defend ourself in bar room brawls, aka bare knuckle brawling.

I understand that for RP purposes, but realistically, when was the last time you used those skills?

Never used melee skills in pvp other than for a bit of fun. Ireckon that this pre-req seems to have been overlooked in the CU...however it is easier to get that xp than the comparative combat xp, so it's prolly best not to complain about it too much

Well once upon a time, Smugglers were considered a special hybrid class whose benefits were supposed to be balanced by the amount of novice level skill points required for the profession. We had to spend 58 novice skill points just to qualify for Smuggler. It was the same deal with other hybrids (BH had to master both Scout and Marksman if I remember right), but with the CU, every combat profession got an increase novice requirement.

Smuggler still has a greater cost than say Pistoleer or Swordsman, but we're no more adept at our profession than they are. Many would even argue that they have better mods and abilities for less cost.

I dunno, our 40 sec Root (soon to be Mez, apparently) is pretty damn powerful. The ability to use our specials with other ranged weapons than just pistol is pretty cool too (rooting from 65m away is so much fun), and I don't seem to remember hearing any stories from pistoleers that involded 3 female Zabraks, 2 female Twi'leks and a vat of cooking oil.
