I think the ranking system thats was stated is less like a military rank, but more like a Moffia rank. Where as the more you get away with, the higher your ranking. That would be cool, and this is something that all the professionsshould have. (I mean whats the deal with giving us EX after we master an Elite Profession if we can't do anything with it)
Yeah, the idea of Smuggler rank is how much in demand you are due to successful missions. As many novels state, Han and Chewie were the greatest of smugglers since they nearly always succeeded. How this works is that you start out at the bottom of the mission pole, barely trusted and must work your way into being the best. You will be increasingly given more difficult and more lucrative missions depending on how many prestige points you have earned. I want to have an NPC who has a Top 100 Smuggler list on the server, the top spot going to the Smuggler with the most Prestige Points and so on. That way you know who is the best so to speak.
Another thought I had was that Smuggler missions in space would have different effects and results depending on your prestige point and mission difficulty level. For instance, you would face more pirates and faction enemies trying to get your cargo. One neat idea I thought of to make the missions more difficult and harrowing is that at random times during a mission, some components may short out and you will lose them for a few seconds until they are restored. You may lose the hyperdrive and have to make a run for it until it comes back online, you may lose shields and have to avoid incoming fire like crazy. Blasters may shut down so you are forced to run etc...
Those component failures are temporary and only during the most difficult missions to make it more likely you will fail. The components won't be permanently damaged or show damage, they will just be offline until you get a message or alarm noise saying they are online again. It will simulate a more hot rodded ship like the Millennium Falcon's constant component shortouts at bad times sort of thing. Also, the most difficult missions won't be mundane and easy due to that.

Yeah, the way I read into it is that the rank is like the difference between a Mafia Thug, Enforceer, Hitman, et cetera. They don't have badges or chevrons, they're just more/less reknown/skilled, thusly small tasks are given to the Thugs, while the bigger jobs are taken by the Enforcers and Hitmen.
That's my thinking... only, perhaps with slightly more Smuggler centric titles
