Maybe just means you wern't supposed to leave the profession in the first place. It is your destiny to smuggle (well attempt to find ways at least lol) and be shady
On a serious note however, I have never had this happen when I changed from any other profession.

This has happened to me in the following conditions: You surrender a skillbox while at the time you're wearing the title that is granted in that skill box.
You'll be able to keep this title as long as you only switch your title to having No title. Upon relogging, the old title will be back. As soon as you change it to a real title you have rights to and log out, you will not have access to the old title.

I have no problem with anyone keeping the title (especially if they can't get rid of it, lol) BUT I have a problem with letting players pay you thinking you're a master. If you tell them you aren't really then that's just fine, but to take their credits knowing full well a bug is making them think you're master isn't right, and I believe against the TOS.

The fraud thread got me to thinking...
During the hologrind madness, I think something got borked with titles when you leave a profession. Long story short, I used to be a master smuggler and gave it up to explore bounty hunting. When I acquired a second account, I started returning my smuggler/bh hybrid back to a true smuggler...but noticed something everytime I logged on...
I still had that little badge of "master" over my head. I figured, well, must be I just have to change it...? So i changed it to "no title" which I prefer to anything at all...helps with the RP...
And I logged out.
For the next week or so I tried this...and I've gained and lost several professions etc in the mean time...and still, no matter what I set my tag to on logging out, when I relog, I end up with Master Smuggler over my head...It's been months and several patches since, and I've finally just resigned myself to it and I'm working on getting it back - if only to be able to respond "Yes, but not for you" when bothered to slice some random person's already l33t weapon (cuz who wants to be blamed fornot giving them the slice they wanted?)l
But was curious if this has happened to ANYONE else, or if perhaps the game is trying to TELL me something...

Oh, and no, I don't go into town yelling that i'm slicing. I respect the profession too much to screw people over...
(butI would be lying and a crappy hoodlum if I said it hadn't crossed my mind...)

Its well known that if you select no title when you log back in you have your last title selected again. I've never heard anyone keeping a title once they have surrenderd the appropriate skill box though.

I had that happen when the hologrind began. I dropped Master Merchant to start hologrinding and I had the title but kept it, as I planned on remastering it anyways after the grind. After I mastered AS and dropped the skills, Master Armorsmith kept showing up exatcly as you described. Then I mastered artisan and dropped, and the same thing happened.

Then screw it, i'm keeping it active.
As mayor of Carrion Valley on Starsider (Naboo, 5900 5366), I've got to be a shady character...

Then I guess it's a good thing i've not sliced a single item since dropping master then isn't it? 
I tell people right up front, "I can try, but my skills aren't what they used to be..."
"But you're a master..."
"Oh this old thing?" :holds up hidden bobble marking his rank in the smugglers' guild: "Heh, I left the guild ages ago, but those preoccupied scumbags never asked for my badge back." :shrugs and walks away:
