Smugglers should be able to choose from a wide variety of specific underworld NPC Factions (Nym, Jabba, Valarian, Black Sun, Rebel, Rogue Corsec,Chiss Poacher,Trandoshan Slavers etc.) to work for. It could be that you start working for some minor factions first and get a "reputation" before being offered a place with the big boys, Factions like Garyn, Binyare, Meatlump, Ragtags and the various unerused POI Bunkers and caves could be used for this.
First there arethree systems currently in place that would make this work, Duty Missions, Jedi Visablilityand Force Sensitve Village.
1st. You get assigned a duty Smuggler mission, Pick up, Deliver to Specific spot and pick up payment, return to quest giver. No problem there. Earn Reputation, which is used to calculate the Difficulty of the mission.
2nd.There should be an XP turn in for smugglers to earn reputation,Return Slicing XP and have an NPC available to convert that, as well as Starship Combat XP (at a Very High Exchange Rate).
3rd. You should only be able to work for a Single Faction at a time (under contract so to speak) if you wish to change factions you suffer a reputation loss, this way the characters take responsibility for their actions and have some consequence to their decisions. This ties to the FS quests only being able to be done one at a time.
4th. With enough Reputation, you Find yourself on the BH terminals, asa target from rival factions trying to slow their competitors. The twist will be if the Smuggler defeats the BH sent after him, he earns more reputation which will make him a more valuable target. BH's should also be allowed to Hunt A Smuggler in Space as well as ground
5th Crafting Professions- SW's should be able to craft Secret Compartments (for use in the cargo hold slot)from Schematics provided as a reward to the smuggler during his rise in reputation. Smugglers should also be allowed to Slice Starship equipment IF he/she also has the Novice Shipwright Skill. This should also apply to weapons and armor on the ground. (if you want to be a slicer, you give up combat skills).
I appologize if some of these ideas have floated around before, these are just my thoughts,
Flame On.....
