Now more than ever I think, smuggling missions should offer slicing components (as well as other things), as rewards.
First, I may be slightly changing my attitude towards the rarity of high end components dropping, not because I like it that way, but it sure has changed my attitude towards the high end slices. Maybe they should be rare, maybe they should be expensive and maybe they should be the reward for the highest end smuggler missions.
Here's my idea. Remember discussions on BH missions for smugglers? How there was a tier system of Deadbeat points, I believe it was called. Well why not marry that hierarchy with the tiers of slicing components? So a mission to get some Delicate Triggers would be a tier 4 mission and carry with it 4 deadbeat points. The reward would be a crate of triggers. Now, I also think the higher the mission the longer and more content rich it should be, so a mission to smuggle some triggers would take maybe a couple sessions. Maybe a good way is to give the mission a leg for every tier, so a tier 4 mission has four legs to it.
Not only would this give us content and more appropriate access to slicing equipments, it would have us smuggling something people actually want, which I think is an important thing. Of course, I think there should be smuggling missions for other things as well, including smuggling jedi from one place to another or for spices or other special crafting components (e.g. weaponsmith items like high end barrels).
Smuggler should be the conduit for all players through which all items of an illegal or unauthorized nature. Of course, the occasional NPC could still drop slicing components, but in the form of a broken gun from which the smuggler extracts the device...kind of like Reverse Engineering, which is to say, you kill a SBD and loot it's broken gun. You take that to a smuggler, who extracts the trigger assembly or the barrel and can then add it to yours. And maybe in the process get a fragment of a schem to make the item like Shipwright's do with Firespray schems. So you slice into enough broken guns and you get a limited use schem to make that item.
BTW, I think it might be fun (and added risk) if there was a chance of certain weapon's blowing up while being modified...so slicing might be dangerous. I mean think about it...tinkering with a Lightning Cannon might not be the safest thing in the world. Heck, poking around in the back of a TV can be dangerous if you touch the wrong things (google having fun with capacitors).
I also agree with another poster that the Unarmed req should be replaced with Engineering 4 and that certs to slice/extract certain components from weapons/armor should be in the Slicing tree, so only a master smuggler, for example, could extract a usable Delicate Trigger Assembly. I would also suggest that both the Simple and the Finely Crafted Toolkits be craftable at Slicing One and Two
