Thread: Smugglers listed as crowdcontrol... what control?

I just wanted to give a quick bit of info about something I find a bit off with the CU. On the profession diagram it lists the smuggler profession as being fixed into the place of crowd control as a 'mezzer'. However upon playing on the TC I have to say that the smuggler is totally useless in this role. The majority of their specials focus mainly on slowing the movement speed and attack rates of the enemies, however the movement speed reduction is so minor that you need to continually apply a string of specials to keep the enemy at a distance.

But given the nature of the fact its supposed to be a mezzer its totally lacking in significant confusion, knockdown and effects which prevent the enemy from even attacking. Its certainly not capable of dishing out these status effects to multiple enemies at once or even able to rapidly apply them to multiple enemies one by one. The sad fact is that the bountryhunter and commando is better are disabling enemies than the smuggler.

Give it a go and ask yourself, do you real feel like a crowd controller?

I believe there's some confusion about what a 'crowd control' profession should actually do. I always thought that crowd controllers should be professions like pre-CURB Carbineers with area attacks and area state attacks. Seems I was wrong.

hell, a smuggler itself has no business controlling a crowd. pistoleer, maybe. but a smuggler, im sure they would mostly have a role that keeps them in their skin....like crowd evaders..

The way I see it, smugglers are exactly in the [combat] business of crowd control.
Smugglers, as a general rule, need be discreet. This means avoiding combat whenever possible. However, should a fight become unavoidable, it's in the average smugglers best interest to be able to control his attackers: slow them down, confuse them, or otherwise hinder them long enough for the smuggler to make an escape, or bring heavier fire to bear.
And it's precisely for that reason that I agree that "crowd control" in SWG should involve area effect specials. Rather tough to control crowd when you can only aggrivate one member of it at a time.

I can see why they figured crowd control was a good role for the smuggler. Afterall they're supposed to be a very 'people' kinda profession. Learning how to keep themselves out of trouble and maintain control over every situation they are in so that they don't encourage trouble to begin with. So yes, crowd control by means of disabiling threats and/or stalling tactics is right up their alley. However in practice none of the smuggler special moves actually acheive any of this. A smuggler's focus should be on a similar level as the bountryhunter only more passive. Key things they specialize in should be dizzying attacks, knockdowns and attack delays. However they've been focussed on slowing movement speed mainly with side order of attack delays with a single knockdown ability. Saddly none of them have any lasting effect to allow you to control more than one enemy at a time and even then its only a small window of control.

I think smuggler by itself won't be great for combat, butafter looking at the modifiers it's THE add-on profession for combat, add m.smuggler to m.commando,m.bh,m.pistol,m.carbineer or even tkm and that profession gets a big bonus, whether it's new moves, weapons, defenses orgeneral speeds and accuracies.

Something like HALF our specials don't work or don't work right, and that is why we can't control crowds like a true smuggler does, when he's not making bongs.

yeah Smuggler seems more like a support profession.

it won't be too powerful in combat on it's own, but when paired with almost any ranged prof it makes for a deadly combo.

see my thread "a quick study of crowd control" for my feedback about crowd controlling abilities and Smuggler paired with Pistoleer and Carbineer.
