All you wanted to ask about smuggler but were afraid to ask

(A guide for the non smuggler)

Slicing..

How slicing works:

Slicing is a pretty simple process; there are just a few simple steps.

1-The smuggler uses the radial menu on the item to be sliced and brings up the slicing menu.
2-The slicer then applies either a molecular clamp to the item. This tells the smuggler what wire to cut first.
3-The smuggler cuts the wire he/she is told to and then slices the second wire.
4-The item is then randomly sliced for damage or speed if a weapon or base effectiveness or encumbrance if armor.

How to act when dealing with your slicer:

The following part is just copy and pasted from Dinan’s ‘The does and don’t of working with your slicer. Read it, follow it

Now that you have a good understanding of how slicing works, let's continue with...

1. Do not get angry at your slicer for slicing speed when you wanted damage and vice versa. There is no way to choose this outcome.

2. Do not believe any smuggler that advertises higher slices because of quality components. There is a tremendous amount of study that has gone into this. Statistically, the distribution of slicing percentages with all sorts of tools, knives, and upgrade kit qualities fit the pure random distribution almost perfectly. If you want the personal touch, all my experience as a master smuggler indicates this also. Personally, I've stopped worrying about how high quality my gear is now. I get 35% slices just as often as I used to (15% slices too but then again, that's how randomness works).

3. Do go to smugglers that you trust or your friends that you trust refer you to. The way slicing works in this game requires a certain amount of trust. There are plenty of swindlers out there in the real world and in Star Wars. Don't give your prized Krayt Scatter Pistol to some random schmuck you have never heard about unless you are willing to take that risk.

4. Do ask what the fee for Slicing your equipment will be before you begin slicing.

5. Do not argue about price. Yes, a slicer doesn't spend an awful lot on tools if they mine their own components, buy their own factories, and get schematics for free or make their own by getting novice weapon/armorsmith. Fact is, smugglers typically put a lot of thought into their price. Trying to haggle down the price typically won't work. I'm a master smuggler, and like many other master smugglers, we aren't in it for the money any more and certainly we are not in it for the experience. We can't put our goods on a vendor for you to pick up, like an image designer you are paying for our time, and that is priced by the smuggler individually.

6. Do not be disappointed with the smuggler when you get a low percentage effectiveness slice on your armor. Encumbrance slices can be up to 45%, effectiveness slices are significantly lower. If you get a 22% effectiveness slice, that is actually quite high on average! Finally, the ideal range for slicing weapons for a master smuggler is 15-35% equally likely on speed or damage. The range for a Slicer (Slicing IV) is 10-30%

7. Do treat your smuggler with respect. Master smugglers pay alot for the ability to get the highest average slice possible. We have to get 2 million pistol xp and most of our combat skills are broken and we certainly don't get any combat modifiers so our mission difficulty is level 10 without any other combat classes. Like Master Image Designers, we put our time into this and the end result is something we cannot sell on a vendor. Treat us with respect and we will be more likely to stop what we are doing and slice your gear.

8. Do not be afraid to send us e-mail asking us about details or to set up appointments. I'm more than happy to work with a client who has two crates of vibro knucklers and a full suit of composite to slice -- but not when I'm in the middle of Dathomir. Work with me on a time and I will cut you a deal on the price and we can take care of everything at once without distractions.

9. Do not try to play us Master Smugglers off against each other -- especially on price. There aren't many of us around and typically we get along very well.

Special slices’

Asking a smuggler to perform a slice in any other fashion other than the above mentioned fashion is an EXPLOIT and is a bannable offence. The majority of smugglers will refuse this type of slice and many will /report you for asking them to exploit.

Combat:

Feign Death:

While it may be annoying to be engaged in PvP combat with a smuggler and have them FD this is not considered an exploit. Sending harassing tells to the smugger in question is generally a waste of time as well. Many smugglers relish their FD time as a valuable time to go make some food or take a bio break.

Attacking the smuggler while FD in order to cause the black rot’ (black bar) is an exercise in futility if the smuggler is not wearing armor. With healing so readily available they can clear that in a matter of minutes. All in all it likely does more damage to you due to the degradation of your weapon.

Underworld:

Faction Point Sales:

Factioned smugglers with the underworld 4 box and are cols in their faction are able to sell you FP. Generally most smugglers that sell FP tend to sell it for between 100 and 140 credits per point of faction. This is done via a macro. The process while it may seem slow is MUCH faster than grinding it yourself. It takes a smuggler with the macro about 11 min to sell you 5k FP.

Faction purchases:

Factioned smugglers are also able to buy faction perks at a rate much lower than that available to the general public. The bonus at master smuggler is a 25% discount.

Spice:

Spices are short term buffs that boost your stats. These buffs can range from a very small buff to a rather large one. The most popular spices are Moun Gold (a large mind buff) and Neutron Pixie (A huge health buff with buffs to several other stats). The downside to spice is its downer. When the buff expires your stats will be reduced by how much the spice buff was for.

For example Muon Gold buffs all your 3 mind pools by 500. At the end of your buff all your pools will go down by 500 for a period of time. However, the downer can be largely reduced by using a food that chef’s can make called Smuggler’s Delight. It reduces downer time.

That’s it for your tutorial on the smuggler profession. Any other question’s can generally be answered by a local smuggler that you know. Trust us, we don’t bite. Well………..not that much
