Have they announced if any aspect on JTL will be basically doing trading runs to make money. From one space sector to another or from one planet to another? IE will cargo ships really have any use?
I haven't been able to find anything about this

It would be cool to have ships doing cargo runs...
...and be boarded and looted!

Unfortunately, due to the restrictions placed on PvP, and unless they allow for separate, PvP-able missions, the only way you are likely to be a happy ganking pirate looking to score off the misfortune of others, or a ballsy freelance trans-galactic trucker looking for a big payoff is by playing a different space mmorpg.
Though... I doubt it would be very hard to implement a pvp mission structure outside of GCW, given the current TEF system/bounty hunter mission system.
Using the current system, take two factions that players can have temporary membership to, but have no perks or anything like that. Say, a pirate and a caravan faction. Pirates declare themselves as pirates when they hop in their ships, and the haulers going for big bonuses declare themselves, as well, by accepting the mission.
Pirates go around and patrol, looking for transports that won't be defended by authorities. Or people cleared to represent authorities. Or any concerned citizen who doesn't like pirates.Cargo haulers, meanwhile, look for the safest or fastest route to a dropoff.
Alternatively, pirates could get missions for traders actively online andzooming throughspace, running cargo stealing/dropp offmissions through a similar interface to the bounty hunter vs. jedi missions.
Though unfortunately, I have a feeling that combat and trade in JtL is going to cater to the same slackjawed powergrinding equipment-worshiping lackwits that the ground game encourages. Well, the ones that can point and click fastest, at least. That said, good pre-planning and/or agile adaptiveness involved in pirate vs. trader pvp missions probably won't happen. Although I'm certain that there will probably be options to steal cargo from npc pirates.

To answer your question, no one in the communityknows what JTL is going to implement in regards to trading runs or trading missions. No one knows if they're going to even have this type of play in the expansion. Anything that anyone says about how NPCs will react, or how patrols will be done, etc... is pure speculation and rumor. Nothing has been announced.

I thought they had said it was going to be nothing but combat? Most of the ships seem to be nothing but fighters. Since resources stack and take up one item slot in your inventory and large machinery like vehicles and droids are moved about in your datapad, what is there to transport? A character can transport a bulk freighter's worth of resources in a backpack, why would anyone need to hire a ship to move items?

Yep, it's nothing but combat. A guy (my memory's aweful) on the JtL forum a while back posted a concept document for a whole trading system that used JtL and some things on the ground. TH said that it was all just combat, but that he had a copy of that concept on his desk.. so I guess they've at least thought aboutit for the future. However, given the vast amount of work needed for the combat revamp, the GCW revamp (potentially much larger than the CR) and the, ahem, Smuggler revamp, it's going to be on the back burner for some time.
