Do Smuggler and Pistol even work out well as a combo? I mean Smuggler has a lot of specials that seem to make Pistoleer kind of useless next to it. I'm still debating on maybe trying a new combo, crafter/Smuggler.

Kayber,
this has been discussed alot here, take a look back through the old posts for some really great info on it.
I do Master Smugg with some Pistoleer (4-0-0-0), comes in handy and the speed increase is noticable.
Crafter/Smuggler is good, if you decide to give up hardcore combat and adventuring...it gives you a few more things to sell and the ability to slice your own products.

Okay, here's my view on double Mastering on Smuggler and Pistols.
First, you get to capitalize on the Smuggler only weapons. Pistol Speed, Accuracy and Defence help out a lot here.
While many of the skills are redundant between the two, this also gives you backups, meaning you can stack multiple state effects which do the same basic thing, but are dissimilar enough to be thier own type.
With either or both professions, you're not the type of player that will hit your opponents hard, but you are the type of player who will hit fast. This means you can keep opponents distracted and of guard.
An opponent who is unable to fight to thier full extent, is the ideal opponent for a Smuggler.

while I didn't keep the template I still think it is viable. Speed, Accuracy, plus there is the hopes that the devs will realize they screwed pistoleers and give them some incentive in an upcoming patch (yeah, I know, keep dreaming). Anyway, I would recommend adding x31x bounty hunter to master smuggler/master pistoleer. It gives you a knock down and a nice damage shot with increased critical shot.
Plus there is the Han Solo roll-playing factor, pistols just rock.
I ended up going master smuggler/master bounty hunter. What can I say, I LOVE my scatter pistols.

If I was doingMaster Pistoleer/Master Smuggler,I'd pick up MM and Commando x3xx, you already have all the prereqs. That will put your base general ranged accuracy at 210. Soon as you equip your pistol that jumps to 250 unbuffed.Accuracy=damage. I took some rifles myself, particularly for the third line which has startle shot, and it is on a separate timer from disarming shot. Also Improved head shot only has a lower multi than sniper shot and the BH's advanced crit.
