...how would you do it?
I mean nuts and bolts, not 'with guns blazing' or 'with style, of course!' or 'they'd never even know I was there'.
What do you imagine you'd be doing?

Getting a reputation for myself which would increase reward and payout for my missions, and difficulty.
I would talk to a contact who I would have had to befriend greatly in order to earn his trust. He would give me either a contact to meet or directly give me a mission. The mission would involve items that I could readily use and sell if I felt the need.
I would take the items and have to travel through space, in order to deliver the goods and would be jumped possibly in space or on ground, or even not at all.
If I felt the need of taking goods I would have to explain why when I talked to the drop off point. I may successfully swindle the drop point or I may piss them off and lose standing with my contacts.
That is a jest of it...

QFE. We all pretty much have an idea about how it should work, all that's been done here for the past 2 years is discussions on how Smuggling should be implemented.

Umm.. isn't this exactly what some in-game-now quests are? Sounds exactly like Jabba's Theme part with a space mission or two mixed in, and if this is the kind of thing we ask for, I think a FedEx Quest generator is what we'll get.
I think things like having the Empire blockade Dantooine would be nice. Stop Travel to the space ports. Post more guards that scan way more frequently at the Mining Outpost. Station TIEs around the space station and have a Star Destroyer there that intercepts and scans incoming ships. So the only way to get there would be fly through the gauntlet and make it through the scans, or.. have a smuggler fly you in complete with mini-game conversations, like "slicing" Imperial communications to get a landing permit code that you don't know works or not till you try during a conversation with the escorting by TIE Interceptors, secret landing strips away from the Imperial controled starport.
That's smuggling to me.

Jabba's theme park isn't too bad, it has a story line if you care to read it. It's that there is no real excitement involved with it. How many times can you do Jabba's? Only the once

I did read it and enjoyed it. The missions were boring and uninspired though. I really can't see basing an entire profession around that game play mechanic though. It seems that some smugglers would settle for that level of "smuggling" though, which after the history of the profession, seems dreadfully unimpressive.

No that isn't.
In the system I want, I want reprecussions for my actions. I want to be hunted if I lose to much faction. I want people to come after me.
Jabba's quests do not give valuable items in any means except for rewards of course.
I'm talking about some mega spice with +1000 action regeneration or something, something that is just AWESOME that I definately could use or sell. I'm not talking about some -.1 5/5 power handlers or something.
Like others have mentioned, go read the In Concept forum.
The Smuggling section of our publishes has essentially been completed and is in the text coding section. They are making story lines and possible factions for the quests. Then it has to go into QA testing before it reaches test center and so forth.

Honestly - I don't want a "Smuggler Terminal" - And I pray that isn't what we get - I actually don't want to request a smuggler mission at all - Maybe after I've worked my way up to work directly for Karrde, Jabba, or Nym - But for your run-of-the-mill smuggling contracts?
I want to be hanging out in a cantina, sipping on a jawa beer, watching some fine-lookin' Twi'lek strut her stuff and have some kid run up to me (a la the Old Man when you get FS) and tell me he desperately needs to get offworld - There's a gang coming for him. He's got a friend floating around Yavin - He can't pay me much - He's only got eight grand on him - But if I can get him there safe, he'll give me four more.
Or a droid walks up to me (a la the Old Man when you get FS) and informs me that his master has a delicate cargo he needs transported near Toshi Station and would prefer to avoid any imperial entanglements.
I think you see the point - I want to be approached by NPC's to take the quest. _THAT_, IMHO, would greatly assist immersion.

I'd like to point you to the in concept boards, there has almost exactly what the smuggler community wants with the ability to smuggle (sans Player Bounty Hunters chasing you
), that's more or less what we want as smuggling
