You can only use smuggler abilities with a ranged weapon.
TK gives you great natural armor, so you can look stylish while you're fighting!
Other than that... there aren't a lot of advantages.
I used to be TKM / M Smuggler / swords 0040 / novice medic... worked ok for PvE. I was able to solo smallish krayts, but not the big 2.I was mostly melee, as you can tell by the swords. Not a real strong template, but it's better than smuggler / crafter. 
If you're in to pvp, I wouldn't even think about tkm / smuggler. You'd just get steamrolled.
I had the duo with some swordskills for a while, but I have to admit it was more off the rp reasons for this. Only FD works when you wield open hand, or a schyte as I did. It was only to be able to drop armor. Later I discovered that armors can be a large advantage compared to the TKM inate thing as I use AA, so I droped themelee stuff.
I did both pvp and pve with this combo, and apart from the lack of defences as you split the weaponry it was kinda fun. Use the mezzers and stat shots from smuggler before I move in with the schyte to kd and do theheavy damage sword specials. Could have been good if I had composed a suit with all the pistol/ sword speed and accuracy tapes. I have to admit I really saw the advantage of being able to mezz my oponentso I could reach him with my sword.
It's nice for the 800-900 defense I get with CoB and need to "hold" the mobs while my guildmates take them out. I switch when the need arises and of course power boost and more importantly meditate has it's advantages. I've held my own against BH's and surprised a few.
