I'm not sure there is an easy way to change slicing from random to picking the slice you want to do. But here's a couple ideas for the dev's.
First, make weapons upgrade and armor upgrade kits in two types. This would give the smuggler the option to buy more of what he or she needs to do the right type of slices and save the end users the cost of paying for a slice he or she doesn't want.
Or second, make slicing unrandom at the master level. The pop up screen could be adjusted to show both slices that are available and the master smuggler picks the one he or she wants to do for the customer. This may not be an effective way to get high % slices. But at the master level slicing shouldn't be random and resources for mole clamps and laser knifes should matter for higher % slices.

This and many things along the lines of this have been proposed many times over. As a matter of fact, the IC thread for the Smuggler Revamp is over a year old at this point. It's just a matter of waiting to see what the devs have to say about everything that's been suggested at this point. Heck, we're still waiting to hear what they have to say about the ideas of one of their own (GM).

Yeah, that's the problem.
There hasn't been any real changes to the smugglers since the launch of the game so the same ideas get recycled every so often. It makes it difficult for new smugglers, or people wanting to honestly contribute because who wants to read 2 years worth of stickies and threads?
Heck, even getting through a cool thread like "Chuckle for the Smuggler" takes days.
Not a defense mind you - just an observation
BTW - is it true that Force Luck gives you an increase in slicing??? <waiting to see who snaps first>

Cheers

*holds up his T-shirt from back in '03 with the message "BEEN THERE / DONE THAT" written across the front.*
I think one of the first messages I ever read in this forum was titled "LET MASTERS CHOOSE!!!!11one!shiftone!"

I would like to repeat my objection that "unrandom at master bad." Slicers do okay, business wise. Considering they're not as good as masters I always felt, as a slicer, that I did an appropriate amount of business. Make it so masters can choose speed or damage and slicers will NEVER work again. And the lower levels are already fairly bereft of fun and profit.

Actually, a Slicer (non-Master) is pretty much out of business as it is. Most players I know require a Master, and won't take a slice from someone who is simply x4xx. The possibility of that extra 5% is just too much to pass up

I kinda felt my suggestion was old hat and had been out there for sometime. I've been a master smuggler for well over a year. But it would seem (at least on my server) that smuggler is a skill no one wants due to the abilities being so unclear. I agree that most will not take slicing from someone other then a master if what they want sliced is of great value or if the piece isn't just for grinding. I've seen and used some of the so called "counting slices and smuggler tricks for better slices"None seem to really work.As of right now. Weapons Smiths would rather destory a speed sliced weapon then sell it and Armor Smiths are looking for only the best effectivness slices. So far armor has been the most random for me. But it's hard to tell someone that 4 out of 5 weapons slices are speed in my case. I'm not sure how resources play a factor in the art of slicing. But it should. I've used low grade clamps and knifes and got the same % slicing as using those that are 99%. I guess as always we wait and see what is in store for the skill.

First of all, I still see Slicers at Coronet.
Secondly, just because they're not doing great business now doesn't mean we should cut them off entirely. I think it's one of our failings that the only fun, and profit, to be had in this profession is in the top box.
