Seems to me that this is very important in creating a SIMPLE system for smuggling.
Who should be able to Smuggle? Answer..everyone, Who should be MUCH better at smuggling than everyone else? Smugglers.
Right now everyone that is Travelling te galaxy with thier sliced equipment is in essence 'Smuggling' (even though there is not any difficulty to it) Should that be restricted? I think not. On the other hand, should the average player be able to move 10 Crates of spice, ora 'backpack full of sliced weapons? Absolutely not.
Lets face it guys, sinlge Items are not hard to hide. and rightly so. I do not belive it will be fun or immersive for me or the customer If I have to help everyone with a a single sliced weapon to get through customs, and creating harsh chokepoints is whta that will get us.
It would use a lot less server resources if players were simply flagged(not TEFed) when they carry more contraband than they have the ability to hide. And then, if you were to put a security checkpoint at every starport entrance, it would only scan those that are obvious, and cut down server resource usage to a minimum. (ie that guy with 1 gun well hidden goes right through, but that guy fumbling with the XG mines, and skoming a yarrock.. check him out..)
Random searches as they are now could still occur also, since they don't really do much anyway.
To prevent griefing by running back and forth through the checkpoint to obg the system.. once a players is scanned Clear thier flag untik they pickup more contraband or until a timer runs out, whichever comes 1st.
Penalty.. The penalty should be something along the lines as what you get for spitting on a stormtrooper... which is scaled to the players wealth..
Naturally Smugglers would both have a higher threshold for thier flag (IE carry more ilegal stuff before they become obvious) and also be able to 'Avoid' the scan better through fast talking, bribing, or simply being lucky.
OBVIOUSLY the contraband count would have to inculde contents of droid storage compartments.. Also MAYBE imperials should get a 1-2 Item bonus for thier count in lieu of them getting a free pass as they do now.. Personally I think they should get nothing, but that would go over like a fart in church..
One more thing and I'm done guys..
With this setup, Players could be awarded XP for passing checkpoints with Contraband with the following cases:
1. Passed through checkpoint while unflagged, carrying a few bits of contraband.. Miniscule XP per Item
2. stopped at check point while unflaggedtheres that random thing..) passed scan while carrying a few bits of contraband.. slightly less miniscule XP per Item
3. Stopped at checkpoint cause your flagged, and have to pay fine.. miniscule XP per item(you just learned what NOT to do)
4. Stopped at checkpoint cause your flagged, and pass the scan.. Good XP per Item(you just found out what works)
*edit* should also be noted taht the XP reward here should by design be small, so people aren't loading up and getting scanned just for the XP of it. The XP from finishing a smuggler mission should be much better, this is just incidental XP and probly shouldnt even give a message when you earn it */edit(so glad to finally be able to do that..)*
And then we would have *fanfare* smuggling XP.. and it could even be added as a pre-requite to our profession cause anyone could earn at least a little bit of it..
Thats my Rant for the day. Tell me whatcha think, more importantly tell the devs whactcha think.

See man, it could be the best idea in thw world. We were just told that nothing will be done at all in terms of the smuggler profession until JTL. Since that is a good 3-6 months away at best, all the ideas in the world aren't going to matter.
