Thread: A new way to look at Spice...

OK, so I'm not a regular here in the Smuggler forums. I do try to read up as much as possible though as one of my characters is a Master Smuggler. In reading some of the ideas concerning spices I've come to a bit of a conclusion. Spices cannot affect HAM. I know this was their original design, but with the food revamp came a new way of dealing with HAM situations. To try and bring spice to the level of food would be foolhardy. Who wants to carry a food that is concidered contraband, when they can pick up a food that isn't. Why mess with downtimes when with a food you can just wait til you're hungry again?

That said I was thinking perhaps spices can affect other stats. Forget about spicing to buff your health, buff to increase your mods. Think about spice as a drug. Late at night an artisan pops a fewspices to get that kick he needs to hone his experimenting abilities. The Master Fencer drinks some spice to increase his ability to dodge shots, the Master Rifleman takes somespice to increase his accuracy. With a dose ofspice a player can get % increase to their ability to do specials. With a dose of spice defenses are stacked higher for a few minutes with a downtime decreasing them for long periods. I can spice and get a +2 to experimentation. But then I suffer a HAM hit afterwards.

Similiarly... maybe we can spice to increase stomach size?

Right now there are some foods that do this (Veghash, Bespin Port etc.)... why not make this the major area for spicing, and make foods the way of addressing HAM? maybe even make some spices components of these foods...

Just a thought from an occasional poster...

That is a fine idea, but I would also like to add a bit to it. As the "balance" issue spreads through armor and weapons, how about a "buff" balance? That's basically what you're looking for. My solution would be the "the shorter it lasts, the more powerfull the buff" concept. Doctor buffs can last for 3 hours, but have them max at,say, 1000. Food buffs could last maybehalf anhour, but max at around 1200-1400. Then there would be spices; only last 5-10minutes, but can buff you around 2000 or more. For the special buffs like increases in skill mods, I think distributing these abilities and levels of assistance among the different buff types (food/spice) would be fine, just as wildbill said. Well, yeah, there ya go...

Hmmm...never thought of it that way. Tonight I'll try popping some Gabaki or Yarrock instead of Muon...

I love the idea of Spices affecting only mods, it would make them something other than extremely mediocre Foods.

from a PvP player point of view, the spice is THE little something you need to get going if the battle is turning against you. Doctor buff, couple brandy, couple canape, music/dance buff and if it goes wrong pop a muon or a pixie in case things look bad.

Problem is 90% of the spices available are USELESS. Nuff said.

Bumkermaster:

This is what I'm thinking... spice can work as a steroid (that quick boost with a painful after effect) and still beviable. But to create a market for it that neither competes with food nor affectsa chef's market it needs to have its own seperate sphere. This is why I pointed towards mods. Yes some foods affect mods... but if spices were to concentrate on more drastic Mod adjustments and have more drastic side effects it would open up a market for them.

In a PvP sense... two Riflemen are facing off. Both have great doc buffs, both have great entertainer buffs, both have strong brandy and canape going. Now the choice is... hit spice to increase regen? or hit spice to increase Ranged Mitigation. Do I need more of a pool, or a better defense against his attack? It's a way of looking at you're entire character a bit differently to allow for more involved gameplay.

Similarly... a doc is wasting away over his resources trying to determine the best way to get his Buff's that much more potent. He pops a spice and is temporarily given a bonus to his experimentation roll. Afterwards he carries the signs of having spiced... maybe more visibility as a spice user and a WOUND hit from the downer. The spice is important to keep his business on the edge, but is also costly in the end.

I'm developing ends of this idea as I go, I'm sure you can see that in this post. If there's interest in this, maybe even a chance of its viability I'd love to write up a proposal for the community. I need a nice break this weekend -

I think this is a great idea, making spices useful without really affecting the market of chefs.
